I'm the conservative who mentioned the "content of their character" quote of MLK's speech. And yes, I've read the entire text many times. If you look over time, conservatives have enacted plenty of legislation that has positively impacted African Americans. Starting with Abraham Lincoln's emancipation proclamation during our Civil War era. To say that all conservatives don't care about black people is ridiculous. And thinking Barack Obama cares about black people just because he's black is ridiculous. Last time I checked it was Romney who showed up at the inner city schools and the NAACP convention. Obama is not showing up because he knows he doesn't have to do anything to get your support.

 

Because there are tons of studies that show that class size is not the reason for poor performance. In many poor performing schools, the class size could be 5 people and they would all still have failing grades. This is why Romney is saying that he will have federal funds follow the child. So if you want to put your child in a better performing school, then you will be able to do so. And Romney also wants to provide funds for tutoring services and digital courses to help children learn more effectively outside of the classroom. Obama is friends with the teachers unions and keeps sending kids to the same bad schools with the same bad teachers. The answer to poor education isn't "hire more teachers"

also I bet you that most of those poor performing schools are in low social economic status (ses) areas. where the high performing schools are in high ses. I can give u several reasons why besides classroom size but you dont add more kids in the classroom thinking it would get better, right?

Romney is not in favor of adding more kids to the classroom. He is saying that is not the sole contributing factor in kids education. Democrats just say there are too many kids, we need more teachers. That's not the solution!

Romney said he would consolidate $4 billion in current expenditures on teacher quality across 10 federal agencies, and send the money to states as block grants.

Romney’s message is about giving parents more school choices. His biggest departure from existing policy was his call for poor students and those with disabilities to be able to attend any public school in their state “or a private school where permitted by law” and to have federal funds follow them, rather than the current system in which the money stays with a student’s local school.

 

Again, Romney is not in favor of adding more kids. He is saying that adding more teachers is not the solution. If Democrats believe that you put a failing kid in a classroom of 30 into a classroom of 20 and he will start getting A's. ???

Romney is saying let parents decide where to put your kids. You can place them in another public school or even a private school with a voucher. If your child needs tutoring services or wants to take digital courses, he will provide funding for that. But hey...what do those crazy conservatives know anyway.

 

So he doesn't want to add more kids but adding more teachers is not the answer either?

Thank you for posting these videos! I think that teachers will always give class size as the reason for poor performance. Nobody wants to say I'm doing a bad job or the parents aren't doing anything at home. Of course teachers want as few kids as people, but the technology teacher in the video said he has between 23-28 students. I don't think that is a ridiculous number for a Philadelphia school.

When a high school student goes to college, he is in lecture halls with 200 students. Nobody complains about that. The fact is education will always come down to participation. If the child, the parent, and the teacher are active in their education they are more likely to be successful. That's why Romney is putting it in the parent's hands so they can choose the best environment for their child. And on top of that, offering tutoring services for low income families. Digital courses will help students learn in a new way and stay competitive with other countries like China.

 

you also have to look at the other statements about the dude saying increasing class size isnt the answer either or high class size is ok. lower class will not hurt either

 

But Romney isn't saying to increase class size. He is saying that class size doesn't have the impact on education they think it does. McKinsey & Company did a survey of over 350 schools from all across the country and different economic conditions and found no relation.

Romney is addressing the core problems. Schools have been segregated by district which creates situations where kids in "bad neighborhoods" go to the "bad schools". Well now parents can choose to put their child in the good schools no matter what district they are in. He is also opening up funds for tutoring services. That is one-on-one personalized attention for the child. Adding more teachers and reducing the class size will do nothing for these kids. Kids who actively participate in class and whose parents are involved and putting them in the best situations will ultimately succeed.

Just as a side note.

When I was in school (a long time ago..im old) we had maybe 25 children in a class. at the most. Ever.

While kids can be inherently stupid...We actually learned things back then. A teacher could do his or her job because the children were given the time and attention they needed to learn

Now days they don't get that. My oldest son, who is in 10th grade, tells me repeatedly that school is a total waste of time. He learns nothing but only because when he went from Jr. High to High School, the class size increased and also the teachers have NO control over the class themselves. The teacher simply can't do the job because no one wants to learn.

And this kid used to LOVE school. It was his favorite thing in the whole world.

So yeah, pull studies and reports out the wahoo. Class size does infact impact the quality of education that the kid can recieve.

 

And I'm sorry, but the sending bad kids to good schools won't help. It will drag the good school down and it will become a shit school and we still have stupid graduates.
