He's gifting the self-absorbed and me-generation a sweet reality check. Though once a person hits the work-force, that usually rights the ship. For the wonderful full speech. He starts about it around 2 min mark.. http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout...ker-tells-students-not-special-145709954.html
I'm reading a book called The Narcissistm Epidemic and this speech plays well into that theme. Interesting.
The Generation of I and sadly, it's the whole idea of individualism being taken to a whole new plateau. Being self-absorbed in your own affairs and forgetting you're part of the collective, uniformed macrocosm known as the human race...where in order to maintain peace and continued progress, learn to do good works to others without the expectation of something in return. That, and you're simply living life with those who can probably share the same kind of stuff.
I'm glad someone is telling kids this, It is long over due. But the problem goes far deeper than just our young people. Selfishness, entitlement and arrogant behavior is the root of our societies moral decay.
pretty much school was the easy part just using healthcare as an example, it's a big reality check when you hit the OR. The notion that exceptional didactic performers were not always the best in practical application, was always stressed. The clinical setting is where you make your dollars, so i respect people that excel in that area. Not everyone survives that test, and you hear about stupid mistakes that they wouldn't have made if they had common sense
I agree with this and I'd like to add that the generation of I includes older folks, not just kids. How many adults are behaving as if we revolve around them? That they have the right to behave in any way they please and carry a sense of entitlement that would suffocate the remainder of society? Unfortunately, it's a pervasive attitude of uber-specialness.
The OR is a perfect collection of narcissists. lol But surgeons do need to have confidence in themselves, in all fairness.
You do realize that we are in the Generation of I, right? Millennials haven't stopped being born since about 1980.
Giving you positive rep for your posts. I think most of the world is like that, not just our society. I could be wrong though.
it's true tho the higher up people go in education, masters, doctorates, whatever...u expect a certain level of arrogance and entitlement from them..as if they're better than everyone else medical doctors..especially (cardiac) surgeons..are the worst it's sad tho..and does contribute to decay people go to school in hopes of making lots of money or self-laudation, instead of going there to gain an education, which they can pass on to help others. people are so eager to fuck you over in school, so that they can get a leg-up. Look at Zuckerburg and the idea he stole from a classmate at Harvard. Look at the business schools that promote fierce competition between classmates. Shit is cutthroat, lol.
We emphasize too much on individualism and fail to realize that there are others out there like ourselves. And for some reason collectivism and conformity are dirty words rolled from the tongues. Most of us are, Huntress. And how many of us are fully guilty of those actions?
