Mitt Romney visited a West Philadelphia school and met with African American leaders to discuss education for inner city kids. He called it "the civil right's issue of our generation". His plan will allow low income students to use federal money to attend private and charter schools as well as providing money for tutoring services and digital courses.

I cant figure the math on this. If your going to use Federal money to give grants and vouchers for private and charter schools, then why not just use that money to invest in the public school system that is already there? I mean, is every child going to get a voucher? Is every low income school district going to shutter their doors, because all their students are now in private schools?

All I can figure is, Mr. Romney's plan is to give just enough money that a lucky few can benefit, (and he technically keeps his campaign promise) but the rest of the disadvantaged schools suffer even worse, because the "solution" didn't help them and now there is no help (i.e. money) at all.

You bring up a great point. Vouchers are just one part of the economic plan though. He also wants to reform No Child Left Behind which will require schools to release public report cards on student learning. He's also going to give states block grants who adopt teacher quality policies.

But ultimately we need to fundamentally think about the way we educate kids because other countries are surpassing us. Maybe it is better to have the creation of more charter schools and even digital courses instead of larger public schools with high student-to-teacher ratios. The way students learn today is vastly different than it was in the past. I have my daughter in a private elementary school and they have several iPad's per classroom for students to learn.

Check out pages 8-10 in his education plan. He talks about the problem we have with African American and Hispanic students.

Oh, right. Because the first incarnation of that plan worked fucking wonders. Our students are SO MUCH smarter now and we have such better quality teachers.

And people think democrats do stupid shit.

So much smarter? Better quality teachers? I don't know what country you're living in. The public system is atrocious among low income areas. Romney wanting to provide vouchers and money for tutoring is a step in the right direction. But just the fact that he is calling this the "civil rights issue of our generation" shows that he gets how African Americans and Hispanics will be successful in this country...it starts in the classroom.

Romney is running a general election campaign and trying to spread the word on his education plan. It would have been easy for him to just go to an all White catholic school and just talk about higher education. But he chose to unveil his education plan at an inner city school being grilled by African American leaders. That is a tough situation...for ANY candidate.

Highlighting the inequity in our K-12 system among African Americans and Hispanics is a big step in my opinion. Everyone asks how can we fix the black community? It starts with education. High dropout rates lead to unemployment or underemployment and that hurts our community and stagnates us. Sure, Romney didn't grow up in the inner city and has had the good fortune to attend some great schools. But my point is that at least he is trying to find a cure and not just treat the symptoms.

But Democrats get so happy at the slightest gestures from their candidates. Clinton played the saxophone and kissed a black baby and that means he understood the issues in the black community? Obama makes a pitstop at Roscoe's Chicken & Waffles and the black community rejoices. It's embarassing! Expect more...

You're right. What was Romney thinking trying to make education better for blacks and hispanics? He should have just said "You better sling crack rock or have a wicked jumpshot".

I disagree with the statement that it isn't an option for our community. It is certainly an option for our community, but not one that we have embraced. 72% of African American kids are born into a single parent home.

I think it's a bit of both. He was definitely campaigning and trying to reach out to black voters. But I think he still realizes that this a big problem that needs to be fixed.

But I think no matter who the president is, black people must take it on themselves to preach the value of education to our kids and put them in the best situation to succeed. So if the public school system isn't working, by all means apply for a voucher and put your child in a charter school.

you guys need to watch the video of that meeting romney had with the teachers there. he got owned by them.

his dumbass stated that he wanted to increase the student-teacher ratio because he believed it would increase test scores.

everyone at the table stated "there is not one research, teacher or parent that will support what you are saying. no parent voluntarily send their child to a classroom with a higher amount of kids versus one with a lower amount".

    he looked really stupid.

Harvard researcher Matthew Chingos, who studied class sizes, found there was no direct correlation between how many school students were in a class and their educational achievement. There are schools across the country that have 30:1 ratios and their scores are great.

We need to change the way kids learn and that's why he's promoting tutoring services and digital courses. Kids today learn in a completely different way.
