Homophobic is defined exactly as Petty explained. It is not MAN PHOBIC, the homosexual is short for homosexual when it relates to 'homophobic'.

It isn't so much a discomfort more than it is a ROLL YOUR EYES. Like, "seriously??" C'mon, now it's disingenuous at this point. They're clearly pandering to the homosexual community and jumping on a bandwagon -- how else do you explain messing with a formula that has worked incredibly well for decades? Activist pressure is a mofo..I guarantee you if they made a movie off this character, it would fail. Straight supporters may talk the talk, but they won't put their money where their mouth is.

Superheroes are far and few in between - the social and standard norm is a heterosexual male.
Why pray-tell, are they attempting to portray otherwise? For who exactly?

 

It's just funny seeing all these threads popping up about people bitching that there isn't enough interracial stuff on TV, in movies, how white men are too insecure to put interracial relationships out there.....

Pretty much everything you said can easily be applied to interracial romance. The reason being that people like petty, and others of his attitude tend to play the game of hypocrisy is because there's no affect to the individual personally. Certainly, many would claim pandering based on sexual orientation here, but the same could be said about interracial romance. Further explanation below...

The key thing you're overlooking is sight. As long as the human being can see what's going on, prejudice could surface pending on their personal attitude. You can SEE two people of the same sex engaging in relations, the same way you can SEE two people of different ethnic identities engaging in the same behavior. Why is one form of love and promotion acceptable and the other isn't? Why is there such a grand scale of hypocrisy in the idea of love altogether?

Furthermore, I'm more inclined to see that the creators are more about expanding the a more socially acceptable culture than pandering to a certain demographic. They've tried it before with older characters and they were ahead of the times, despite much of the lack of appeal. The same way how there's a black Latino Spider-Man in the Ultimate universe, the comics will try to conform to today's personal attitudes.

P.S. Transliterating a word is very much wrong. Fear of Man doesn't make sense since it's without the sexual component. The entire phrase has to encompass the complete definition for the thought to be true. Hence, petty's off the mark.

Personally I can't wait for the day they stop putting out Black Superheros who sleep with White women. So sick of seeing that. Wait, DC already has gay characters in their universe but they need to make an established character gay?? That's not going to get them any new gay readers just as when they introduce new minority or female characters they don't get flooded with new readers from those demographics. Comics sales have been on the decline anyway over the last couple of years due to stunts, gimmicks and "events" such as this rather than focus on actual storytelling and character development.
