Yesterday I went out for dinner in a Greek restaurant and soon after sitting down was served a shot of Ouzo. hehe
Not my favorite drink ,but I do have it sometimes when I go to that place.
Soon I'll get a bottle of coconut flavored Captain Morgan :smt007:smt049:smt037

It double functions as an aperitif, designed to prepare your palate for food...it's opium based. :D

That was the good old days.... Back in my military day, when Hellenikon was still open, my Greek friends took me out and I got sheeeeyiiiiiiiit faced on Ouzo... the old school, opium based ouzo.... good food, ouzo, interlaced with shots of raki, (which is Greek fortified moonshine... lol) and I never even saw the train that hit me...

Almost lost my career but fortunately kept half a bottle of the opium based stuff to prove I wasn't a druggie after failing a "golden flow" (urine analysis) check two days after that weekend blur.... Hadn't gone thru the newcomers orientation when I partook of the grape, so I didn't know...

Now days, Greece and Turkey (and even Italy) control the contents of their respective versions of "Lion's Milk", and the only opium based stuff is only found in homemade ouzo and underground distilleries. Don't get me wrong though, ouzo without the opium still packs that secret punch.... :smt026

Oh my goodness, you have me misty-eyed with reminisce. I totally see your experience in 3D, because Ouzo does that to everyone. Tequila 'aint got nothing on the creep-up factor that Ouzo has. Remembering the days overlooking The Aegean, taking in the warm night breeze on Greek Island __ I cant fucking remember because I was off my face on Ouzo...

Ah, Military man, Military bases :smt049. One of my fondest memories was dating a U.S Navy man while I was in Glyfada.

I've been back there quite a few times since Hellenikon closed on state department business... Glyfada has changed a lot.... they rely on tourists for their bread and butter but rue the decision to support ousting the US military... Glyfada's beaches aren't what they used to be and most tourists only use Athens as a weigh station en-route to more luxurious locales within the country...
