In my (not so) humble opinion this cycle is like any other cycle. It can end but won't stop on its own. The people trapped in it have to put an end to it.

I don't know how that would be done on a large scale but for the people who got out of it it boils down to individual responsibility. The 13 year old sexually abused neglected black teenage girl in the hood could have ended up with 6 kids and a husband that beats her collecting welfare because she lives in the 'hood' and that's what she sees and maybe what her parents did. But instead, she knew she wanted different for herself and her future generations and she believed that was attainable no matter her circumstances. So she stayed straight and got out.

I just use that as an example. Cycles are insidious that way. They lie to you and people might dream of better but maybe don't think it's possible.

It has to be a group effort for it be across the board. A lot of things would have to be addressed that probably never will. Poverty education fairness in our system respect...shit that the people who can make a difference (elected officials) don't care about and that one by one we the small people can do nothing about.

This case highlights that. 3 weeks ago no one knew anything about this. Now the Feds are involved.

Bhah it's way to early for me to be stringing coherent thoughts together.

high-rises are both strategic and tactical nightmares when it comes to security enforcement. criminals loved them. while the travyon/zimmer thing is horrible, i just wished blacks would show as much solidarity and conviction, when it came to dealing with our own. I think if it were the case, we'd be a much tighter community. Instead, we instigate 'no snitching' codes in our communities, that allow criminals to intimidate and kill people who witness crimes. SMDH. Other communities have issues, but i'm not too concerned about them at the moment.

and it's never going to end as long as mothafuckas stick their heads into the sand, or stand around with their dicks in their hands. back in 2009, blacks accounted for 40 percent of the total american prison population, even though we represented a much smaller percentage of the country (12.6%). This shit is broken, straight up. go to the bureau of justice official website if you don't believe me. Our rates compared to others is ridiculous. Maybe it has something to do with profiling, a broken justice system, or just rampant brain damage. either way, this shit aint cool. I just wished we came together and did what we're doing now, outside of racially-motivated shit.

That's the thing for many kids who grow up in the hood, if you go up to a kid who is in a gang, his cousin, uncle, father was likely in one as well, that is all some of these folks know.

Its what they are comfortable with, being in that element and lifestyle.

Remove them from it and they are like a chicken with its head cut off.

We often talk about being institutionalized in prison, but living that gang and crime lifestyle is also another institutionalization before some of these guys even go to prison.

Few of them even know how to stop if they wanted to.

Somewhere in the chain of their life the concepts of education, self improvement and wanting more in life is lost and often it is at a very early age when they are impressionable and influenced.

Yeah. I can see this. That's why I said it has to be in conjunction with things that make a difference over all.

You have to know there's better before you know there's better for you.

Exactly. I saw a piece on Cabrini Green. The Chicago P.D. stayed out of there most of the time, and when they did go in the dope boys had them scoped out long away and could never be caught.

That housing project was like a fortified fiefdom for gang bangers, dope dealers and criminality and there wasn't a darn thing the cops could do.

One time one of the cops was even sniped by someone.

As long as we have young people growing up in settings like that its hard to break that cycle.

If you look at America's history its never cared much for those who are poor, the mentality is figure your own shit out.

Blacks are going to have to en masse lift their standards in society.

The Irish, Italians and Jews that immigrated long after blacks were in America had to lift themselves out of poverty and fled to the suburbs for the most part.

It starts with education, not simply book learning mind you, but also the incandescent approach to life of wanting better for yourself.

I mean when a gang banger is talking about he missed the projects that was demolished that tells you how his mind is thinking.

As long as we think being a baller or rapper is the be all that ends all we will sell ourselves short. Nothing wrong with being a rapper or athlete but those fields are much more limited than an engineer, doctor, scientist, etc.

I had a little cousin talking about "man, school is corny" I looked at him and said fool you better check yourself and get your mind right because rotting away in prison is also corny. :)

The mother of slain teenager Trayvon Martin is seeking trademarks for two phrases that have become associated with the movement surrounding her son's death. Sybrina Fulton filed two applications for trademarks of the phrases, "I Am Trayvon" and "Justice for Trayvon."

I know she is copyrighting his image, and the "Justice for Trayvon" I can see since she created that slogan with her petition. Not sure how can she legally trademark 'I am Trayvon" which is a term that came from the hearts of millions of Americans making a statement. Interesting to see if it's granted.

It goes without saying something has to be done. But it will never work so long as its under the guise of benefiting us only, not legislatively, or hell, culturally. We have to recognize the problem cuts across different classes and segments of black people, but recognize also these classes and segments exist. You won't successfully mobilize anyone failing that recognition.

That's why I feel you have to get more specific than indiscriminately accosting black people for what other blacks do. For all you know I could be some bridge building, Big brother, type dude.. I just don't buy into the simplistic "come on ya'll, lets gets together."

This was the first thing that I thought when I heard this. Millions of people are using the I am Trayvon to demand justice for her son. How you gunna take that and turn it into something that makes money I don't understand. This is coming from the goodness of concerned Americans. The whole point of a copy right is to make it an issue if it's used without permission. And that usually boils down to money as compensation.

I don't know everything for sures but I think this may hurt rather thn help the movement for her son.

I'll probably get flamed, but people never focus on any positive news stories. We attract everything in our lives with our energy. Having the killer killed is just promoting more violence. Too many people rule their lives with fear and ego, then play the victim role. Let the killer sit in prison, but putting him to death will solve nothing. Have compassion that there are people who are so ignorant and hurt, that they think shooting someone is okay. As for the father, I doubt any of you would say, "yes, put my son on the electric chair".

I don't want my tax dollars to go to any murderer so he/she can sit in prison lift weight, get a free education, read all the great books in the world & philosophize. Fuck that, capital punishment it is.

Campassion? Uh, no. Don't need to kill the man, but he damn sure needs to be punished. None of this therapy feeling shit. Ignorance is no excuse is a saying that should apply to this, especially.

Compassion would probably be better suited for somebody who broke a rule because they were completely unfamiliar with a custom. We are all familiar with what murder is.

    it's the truth

many people have attained degrees and higher levels of philosophy, after going to prison

they say with all that time, they've found solace in reading

reading is very important to education..unfortunately so many find that out after being incarcerated

    http://bangordailynews.com/2011/01/...effort-to-reduce-repeat-offenders-save-money/

mothafucka got his associates in that joint

people out in the streets can even afford that..what the fuck?

I don't mind prisoners getting their education and dumping the bullshit mentality they grew up with......but not before people obeying laws can get theirs for free. Mufuckas on the outside gotta go to the school website to find out they aren't taking any admissions until next fall or some shit. :smt099
