True. Zimmerman was attacking Trayvon regardless of what he says. The dispatcher tape says it all. The "Stand Your Ground" legislation is designed to empower vigilantism because it leaves a victim with no responsibility to remove themselves from a threat, but allows them instead to meet force with force. The standard in most states is that you may only use that force which is necessary to extricate yourself from the immediate danger, not to stand and slug/shoot it out. Deadly force is only allowed if viewed as necessary by a (and here's the rub) "reasonable standard", i.e. determined by the jury. Stack a jury with racists and all of a sudden viewing unarmed, retreating black children with good grades and athletic achievement as a dangerous threat suddenly becomes "reasonable".

STARKVILLE, Mississippi (Reuters) - A white Mississippi teenager pleaded guilty on Wednesday to fatally running over a man with a truck because he was black, and received a life prison sentence for a crime the presiding judge said left "a great stain" on the southern state.

Deryl Dedmon, 19, received two concurrent life sentences for the racially motivated murder of 49-year-old James Craig Anderson, who died after being beaten and mowed down in a motel parking lot last year.

Dedmon's admission that he killed Anderson because of his race doubled the teen's penalty under the state's hate crime statute.

"I was young, I was dumb, I was ignorant," Dedmon said during his court hearing in Jackson. "I was full of hatred."

Wow, the cops didn't eve bother to call the number on Tray's cell to even ask what they heard? They utterly failed and betrayed Tray.

I was thinking today...even a law enforcement officer who discharges their gun upon a civilian in self-defense...is expected to instantly surrender their gun for ballistics, is immediately taken off the streets and assigned to desk duty while an immediate and thorough investigation is conducted, and is drug and alcohol tested.
They didn't even test Zimmerman for D & A. They didn't take his gun from him ( I think) and they didn't take him in to be questioned. (I think)

In contrast, when a woman here in Philly killed a guy under the same law last month, (and he was a gun-toting criminal) even she was taken into the Station for questioning. Who trained these Sanford cops? Seriously.

 

I think they thought they were dealing with black teenage garbage. That no one would care and this would be swept under the rug and thought they were doing a Zimmerman a favor because it was easier to believe the live white man instead of wondering if the dead black kid was in the wrong.
They never imagined he was a decent kid who had a family that would actually fight for justice. I would love to see a lot of them fired.

 

From everything I've read about this case so far, Sanford PD blew it from the very beginning... Sending a Narc to investigate a homicide... The narc coaching and correcting witnesses... No BAT ... The list goes on... They had the tapes with the "cry for help" in the background that Zimmerman claims to be his voice... They never did a voice analysis and accepted his word as gospel. They claimed he had no criminal record... They apparently overlooked his assault on one of their own until news investigators "found" it out....

Sanford PD didn't want the truth. A real investigation would have pulled them away from their card game... Or maybe they considered Zimmerman one of the boys...

A young man's life ended needlessly and everything that ensued stinks of covering up their incompetence...

 

Here's the thing though, if you listen to the 911 call, the things Zimmerman is saying about Tray, the way he willfully lies and falsely portrays him, to a dispatcher Tray sounds like a crazed drugged-out, menacing, "something" carrying, about-to-commit-a-crime took-off running-cause-he-was-guilty, criminal. (ironic huh, that the real and only menacing criminal was actually Zimmerman himself)....A cop arriving on the scene could easily be swayed to believe that Zimmerman just killed a criminal who assaulted him. Particularly since he kept exclaiming "self defense!" holding a bloody nose and head gash.

It wasn't until his family insisted their son was just an innocent kid, were they forced to even "consider" an innocent teen might have been killed. Now of course they've realized a defenseless, innocent teen was actually murdered - by a wild cowboy no less - and they are fucking reeling.

 

Yeah, that about sums it up...they figured he was just another dead black criminal #228 in FL, Next.
