Remove Your Google Browsing History Before It's Too Late

Google's new unified privacy policy will take effect on March 1. All the data Google automatically gathers about you, such as the sites you visit, will be dumped into one virtual bucket with your name on it. While you can't opt out of the new approach without abandoning Google sites, you can erase your browsing history.

"Search data can reveal particularly sensitive information about you, including facts about your location, interests, age, sexual orientation, religion, health concerns, and more," warns the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a non-profit organization based in San Francisco and an advocate for online privacy.

If you delete your Google Web History that includes the searches you've made and the sites you've visited, you'll prevent Google from associating that data with information it has collected from other Google sites you use such as YouTube and Gmail. While no one knows exactly how Google would use your combined information, the policy changes have already prompted more than raised eyebrows.

The Center for Digital Democracy today filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. It has asked the FTC to sue Google to stop the policy change and to fine the company. The FTC can impose fines up to $16,000 per day for each violation.

In the meantime, the EFF recommends that Google users delete their Web history. Here's how:

    1. Go to Google.com and sign into your account.
    2. Use the dropdown menu under your name in the upper right-hand corner to access your settings. You'll now be on your accounts overview page.
    3. Find the section called Services and you'll see a link to "View, enable, or disable web history." Here you can remove all of your Web history or selected items. When you disable Web History it will remain turned off until you turn it back on.

To get a detailed view of the information about you that Google keeps, go to "Products" from your accounts overview page. Click the button labeled "Dashboard." You'll see a listing of the Google products you use and links to edit your information.

Thanks for this, i've been wondering about their new privacy policy. I hadn't took the time to read it. I use a lot of Google services and need to be on the watch.

I checked mine earlier today..and it said they had "zero files" on me. Hmm. Yet my YT is connected to my email account, so I don't know how they have zero.

I was listening to a privacy expert on the radio today and she said say for example you have a heart condition or diabetes and do searches about it...your employer or future emp can then buy from Google your browsing history connected to your name.

She suggested the best thing to do is sign out of your Google account and then browse..or clear the cookies. Or use a bunch of privacy programs that are now out there that do work well, she said.

I'm so tied into Google I don't know were to start. I usually delete my browsing history anyway after a little while. I use Google Chrome a lot but, what I love about Firefox is there are a lot more things you can do with it.

Then go with a privacy program if you are truly tied in to them. Several Attorney generals have sent Google warnings, btw..basically the letters are pulling an Alectrona.

It's not that big of a deal for. I use different browsers and periodically clear my history and cache. I have a question off the subject, why do some of you keep changing your usernames? It just kind of confusing sometime.

Please don't talk to me. We're not cool on any level. I don't like you in the slightest and I'm sure the feeling is mutual.

Speaking for myself, I have only ever changed it once, which was today. I changed it because I've grown tired of it. Kuno is a name I have used in general for many, many years online, so for here at least I just wanted a short simple name to reflect how I feel right now...blissful. :smt060

Follow JordenC's link, it will tell you everything you need to know. Just a tip for Firefox, you can go to the options section ( or preferences if your using a Mac) and under the privacy tab choose "clear my history when firefox closes"

That's cool, I just seen your old name and then it was different and it kind of threw me for a minute. My username is the same on most of the forums I visit except some really older ones, I don't know if that's good or bad.

Yeah just did. Wasn't sure if it would be different but it was easy enough to follow along.
It's really sad that they can do this and the fact this is legal is disgusting. The information would only be used to fuck over law abiding citizens. I had a search about testicular cancer last year because I'm at an age where I need to start checking for shit like that and its down right sickening to think future employers could see that as a red flag.

Depends on what you post, lol. You seem like a laid back, level-headed all round nice guy, so I wouldn't worry if I were you. Me on the other hand...[IMG]
