Black male teachers are hard to find

I think a lot of guys, once they have finished their education, are trying to maximize the return on that investment by earning as much as possible in their early years. I wouldn't mind teaching from 45 onward, perhaps at the community college level. We really should pay teachers more as well.

 

Cosign. I would like to teach in my late 40s to 50s but until that stack stack stack away. Life isn't cheap especially if you want to live well

 

You know what? You'd be surprised what a high quality of life you can have with just a moderate salary. I'm a music/film/literature/travel buff. If I can do those things, have a nice little Subaru with my bike rack on top, some grilled fish, veggies, red wine and tomatoes, I'm pretty content.

I plan on doing the community college thing because I would love to teach some challenging econ, poli-sci and law classes at an institution that makes credit hours affordable for everyday people. That's always been something I thought would be cool.

 

That's why I think it's pretty cool that one of our members here is preparing to teach elementary ed. There's a serious lack of male teachers of any race at that level.

Life isn't always about money. It's about serving others and enriching your own soul. Imo. Money is great - who doesnt want more? But happiness it does not buy. Happiness and contentment are choices.

 

You're so right. After about $100,000, you're not really adding that much more joy to your life. Small amounts make a big difference at lower wage levels, but you can get a lot of living out of very little money.

 

I have to disagree. 100k a year and 150k a year is the difference between your wife being able to stay home with the kids if needs be. It means a really good private school opposed to a decent public school. It can mean the difference between vacations twice a year or one every few years.
It also affects what college you can afford to send your kids to.
I get money ain't happiness but its access and access is very important in this world.

 

I did 2 vacations a year, grad school and sending my ex and my son to her country to visit family every other year on $60K and my tax refund. Seriously.

 

I guess where you live in the country matters as well. I used to make 60k a year(maybe a bit more to be honest) and that shit was enough to pay for my condo, my solara, and household bills. After that I was probably left with maybe 400 bucks a month for play money and this is before I went into student loan debt. Nobody wants to be house poor.

What kind of law are studying again?

 

I'm going to focus on commercial and environmental law. I'm a lobbyist and economist, and I think that adding this arrow to the quiver will put me in a position to do some Latin American and African trade and development deals as well as teach.

 

Nice I actually pondered focusing on sustainability to focus on green energy. But I think I'm better suited for the human element more so than the environmental element.

 

Ever thought about incorporating the two? I think there's serious $ in retrofitting old structures for sustainability. Perhaps something like environmental engineering and design coupled with implementation of the plans.
