As I understand it, there are guidelines/codes regarding the display of the flag at half-mast but no penalties for non-compliance. So although the usual list of those that can be honored with this gesture does not include pop stars, a governor can still decide that flags be flown at half-mast for them. I believe flags in NJ were flown at half-mast for Clarence Clemons as well. No disrespect to Clarence or Whitney but I think Christie should stick to the guidelines. To do otherwise is to cheapen the honor and lessen the meaning of the gesture.

Whitney was a Jersey girl who touched the lives of billions and was eventually swallowed by her personal demons. There is no inherent meaning to anything, but as a gesture of respect for her talents the flying of the flag is appropriate.

As I said, there is no inherent meaning to anything. The lowering of a flag is only significant to those who choose to see something in it. If the governors of Kentucky or New York decided that they wanted to lower their flags to half mast for either of those entertainers, there would no absolutely harm in it.

    Whatever.

I also think that Whitney's impact speaks to something stronger in the ability to connect the human soul to how unique her talents were than what you'd find in Britney or Gaga. Your analogy isn't particularly well thought out, which is reflective in your tone as well.

Well based on your logic if everything is subjective and without true meaning who are you to say that Gaga and Spears don't connect to the human soul?
How's that for well thought out.

Never......ever......for a waking moment take your good health for granted...........there are folks all around you, and folks even on this forum secretly suffering horrific and debilitating illnessess......Maladies too embarrassing to share....Too costly to treat...Too deep seated to correct.....Recognize that your life could change in an instant with a bad diagnosis.......So if you have good health, rejoice in the moment, feel fortunate and never again take it for granted...........

Too true, Arch. Without good health, nothing else matters.
