(AP) NEW YORK - CNN suspended political analyst Roland Martin on Wednesday for "offensive" tweets during the Super Bowl that some critics said were anti-gay.
Martin commented on Twitter about a commercial during the Super Bowl that showed soccer star David Beckham in underwear: "If a dude at your Super Bowl party is hyped about David Beckham's H&M underwear ad, smack the ish out of him."

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation said the remark advocated violence against gays. Martin said that he was making a joke about soccer and that he doesn't support violence against anyone.

Martin also tweeted: "Who the hell was that New England Patriot they just showed in a head to toe pink suit? Oh, he needs a visit from (hash)teamwhipdatass."

Martin later issued an apology on his website saying he was "truly sorry" to those who felt his tweet was anti-gay, homophobic or advocating violence. "I'm disheartened that my words would embolden prejudice," he said.

CNN said Wednesday that Martin's remarks were "regrettable and offensive" and he will not be on air "for the time being."

"Language that demeans is inconsistent with the values and culture of our organization, and is not tolerated," CNN said.

GLAAD spokesman Rich Ferraro said CNN "took a strong stand" against demeaning language and anti-gay violence. He said GLAAD looked forward to discussing the network's decision with CNN and Martin.

Some times GLAAD acts like a bully the way they throw their weight around and jump on every little thing that they find "offensive." And it seems that nobody is willing to stand up to them.

I wish Black folks had as powerful of a lobbying group as them, maybe then we could get a Black guy on the Bachelor. ;)

I fail to see how GLAAD even had a case here. How was this anti-gay behavior again????

This is what happens when a politically incorrect society goes OCD with political correctness.

Roland Martin and CNN fucked up and really have no one to blame but themselves for how bad they look. Was what Roland Martin said off the wall??? I didn't really think so, but then I'm not gay. Could GLADD have let what he said slide?? Yes. Were they wrong to call him on it? No. Roland Martin handled the situation badly from the start.

First his twitter comments, while not vitriolic, were still homophobic and clearly promoted violence. I mean if some white pundit had said he'd love to "hang an NBA player" and tried saying "I wasn't being racist, I just don't like basketball" a lot of us would call him on it. Trying to say that he was "insulting soccer"?? I've seen white guys come up with better excuses than that.

Second, I don't really care whether he *intended* to be homophobic or not anymore than I care whether some person *intended* to be racist when they do or say stupid racist shit. Most of the racism I've dealt with in my life I can tell has been done unintentionally. As far as I'm concerned it's not really an excuse to just automatically write off an accusation of bigotry. We live in a country of full of racists and bigots where damn near no one thinks they're a racist or a bigot. I really have no problem with GLAAD bringing attention to his comments.

Third, Roland Martin has a history of making homophobic comments as well as questionable behavior towards gay issues. This is a guy who came running to Tracy Morgan's defense after his homophobic Michael Richardsesque "I would pull out a knife and stab that little Nigga to death" rant in reference to if his son said he was gay. Gay rights groups have had their eye on Mr. Martin for awhile now. I'm honestly surprised he was dumb enough to say something like that on twitter to begin with.

And LASTLY, CNN is a joke. They waited like what, 3 days to even bother suspending him?? And like I've seen being raised on blogs why weren't Erick Erickson or Dana Loesch suspended for controversial comments they've made?? If CNN has any type of disciplinary standards it needs to be applied swiftly and equally across the board. Stop being selective and playing favorites.

the PC police know no bounds, i see nothing "anti gay" about what he said, GLAAD know damn well nothing homophobic was said, some groups like these do seem like bullys, making people apologise for whats not there?, if you say anything against them you will be considerd a homophobic even if you didnt say anything homophobic, its ridiculous, once again another person suspended/lost their job thanks to political correctness
