A God fearing, well educated black man with a strong sense of family will always get my support. If the majority of the black men in this country had those three characteristics, the black community as a whole would be far ahead.

I agree with everything you said except for the God fearing part. I think the black community would go ALOT further with out the fear or belief in a deity/deities. Just saying.

 

Belief in that deity is what gave black people the strength and patience to endure slavery as and the subsequent jim crow era afterwards. Not to mention its the commonality that allowed blacks to be normalized into mainstream culture. So I have to ask what the heck are you talking about sir?

 

I understand that, but at the end of the day it only gives them a false sense of hope. It wasn't God that helped them. It was because they worked their asses off for what they believed in and that was equality. It was their own perseverance that got them through, not God's. Now if you're saying that it was their BELIEF in God and religion that guided and motivated them to fight for the their equal rights, then I agree.

BTW, I'm not trying to change your(or anyone else's)beliefs or anything. I'm just telling you how I see it.

 

I hear you. Truthfully one thing I never understood with you atheists is how do you know for a fact God doesn't influence us. Maybe motivation, determination, perserverence, and inspiration are God. Just a thought. Enjoy your night buddy

Funny thing is an atheist could ask this same question of a christian and the question and answer would be equally as valid.

True.

It depends on your perspective and how you believe in God. If you believe that God is going to take you on a magic carpet ride and lead you to freedom then "yes", you have a false sense of hope that is going to leave you severely lacking in personal and community developement. If you believe that your faith in the higher power, The Grand Architect Of The Universe, or whomever you perceive him or her to be, is empowering you to accomplish the impossible then your belief in God can be the foundation for the building blocks of a strong community. The "magic carpet ride" approach to God can make a person lazy and bring them to ruin. Slothfulness is not rewarding.

i've always found the term "god fearing" confusing. i thought god was all about love, acceptance and all that, so to me "god fearing" just doesn't make sense. seriously, if i have to fear a god, why believe and worship it?

 

I never understood why it had to be just one thing. Atheism has always seemed very lazy in its approach but like you said the same could be said of the the major three that don't allow for change or evolution of thought. That's why I've always subscribed to the Buddahist way of thought which some would argue is atheism even though it does believe in the idea of a higher power which it doesn't give a name to.

 

Just out of curiosity, what in atheisms approach is lazy?
