One off note: Cuba Gooding Jr.'s character felt more like one of those old-time super-dignified black military leader than Terence Howard's. Was anyone else thinking this during the movie?

O,I would give that flick a A+. It has exceeded expectations and it will be on the top five movies. At the preview at the theater I went to five of the orginal Tuskegee Airmen along with their familes.

IGN.com says that the movie came in 2nd after Underworld over the weekend, and had a budget of $93 million (a far cry from the once reported 25-50mil range). I tip my hat to George Lucas for doing what no one else could have. Spike Lee tried, but I think this movie will have more commercial success, especially since Lucas is such a huge icon in film.

He gets money and we get respect as actors and as historical figures.

    it's win/win

I didn't want to view this thread until I actually seen the movie. I seen it tonight and loved it. Lucas really did a decent job IMO. I will definitely be adding it to my blue-ray collection when it's available.

Yeah it was a Hollywood movie but, I liked the way it showed black men on different levels, with different personalities, feelings and vulnerabilities just like anyone else. A lot of Mainstream movies don't do that.

Someone earlier had a question about another moving about this story starting Lawrence Fishburne on HBO. I seen that awhile back and, I believed it was called "The Tuskegee Airman" it was basically the same story, if I remember; with some differences.

I only had a few complaints (and they are just a few). Namely a bit of unevenness among some of the younger actors, except for Tristan Wilds, who has been showing his acting chops since 'The Wire', par excellence. The villains were pretty stock characters. The obstacles they faced were as strongly shown as I'm told they were in real life. But don't get me wrong, it's a great movie. I give it an A- unless I'm wearing my ultra-critical wannabe film reviewer hat on. It's a great Hollywood film.

    Hmmm.......

My main question is ...is why does a school district need to spend that much on history lessons? Couldn't they have waited for DVD and spent less and no one would have to be excluded. I bet Lucas would have cut them a deal too. :p

No Girls Allowed at Red Tails Movie Outing

Girls not invited to see movie about Tuskegee Airmen

About 5,700 fifth-grade boys had the opportunity to watch Red Tails Thursday, a movie about America's inspirational first black military airmen who fought in World War II, but girls were not invited.

The students watched the Tuskegee Airmen movie at the AMC Mesquite 30 theater on Thursday morning.

Dallas Independent School District spokesperson Jon Dahlander told the Dallas Morning News that World War II is part of fifth grade curriculum and lesson plans were used before and after the movie.

The paper reports the field trip cost $32,000 and was funded with Title I federal funds. So the cost of the movie isn't an issue.

But no girls being allowed to attend the screening just might be.

"There is only so much available space at the movie theater, so the decision was made for boys to attend the movie," Dahlander told the paper.

According to the Morning News, the fifth grade girls stayed at school and were given the option to watch Akeelah and the Bee. Akeelah is about a black girl from south Los Angeles who takes part in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

    Update | 12:04 p.m.

Dahlander writes, "There is only so much available space at the movie theater, so the decision was made for boys to attend the movie. Girls stayed at school but principals were given the option to show them Akeelah and the Bee."

Akeelah and the Bee is about a 11-year-old South Los Angeles girl who participates in the Scripss National Spelling Bee.

    Update | 5:41 p.m.

The all-boys field trip cost more like $57,000 -- not $32,000, Dahlander told me this afternoon.

JordanC,no question if one of the students e-mailed him or did a You Tube video about his/her experience would Lucas relent.

Nothing done by the idiots who run the Dallas ISD surprises me. They are notorious for wasting money & making stupid decisions. Screwing over the children & the taxpayers is evidently what they're all about.
