Interestingly that we are discussing this, just yesterday on the news, my city showed a group 3 teens (2 Black/1 Asian) jump a 64yr-old white veteran and rob and beat him mercilessly as he walked passed them while chatting on his cell phone. (He's in the hospital undergoing surgeries). He was evidently targeted by them. The attack was caught on surveillance tape. People here are demanding the charges be filed as a hate crime. So I am curious to see if this happens based on our exchanges.
Does the hate crime law also apply to age discrimination? Unless they have statements about them looking for white or old men, it might prove difficult to prove that element of the crime.
That's for the cops to figure out, I'm assuming. Though I will say based on the grainy footage, they appear to be viciously kicking him even though the man is down. That's beyond a robbery. Also, the area is predominately Black (maybe 80/20 ratio), so its not going to bode well for them...the suspicion is much like say if a Black man was walking in a predom white neighborhood and he got assaulted and robbed by a group of white kids...people would suspect it's a hate crime along with the assault. One nice thing we've learned is the much loved Vet has for 25 years worked to place disabled and returning Veterans into jobs when they couldn't find one. In support, Vets are going to show up and fill the courtroom when the teens are arraigned.
Well it really comes down to intent. If they targeted the guy because he was white then ya they that's a hate crime. But like you said the police will need to figure out if that was the case.
It's never been this bad don't forget I actually live in it, not in the suburbs, not in jersey, and not in some Podunk town that's 100 miles away from it
30 years in this city...suddenly we got flash mobs, teachers being assaulted by students on public trains, old vietnam vets getting rolled on by gangs... what in the hell??
Yeah man. Alot of kids rush the convenient stores taking what they want and then leaving. There's nothing Store owners can do about it because its just to many of them. It's sickening to see. It's a huge problem in Maryland too.
Don't forget last week's 23yr-old Connecticut guy, fresh out of Temple University, brand new to our city having just moved here, who was beat to death on Chestnut street. Why? Because a block up the street, he was trying to get a cab and the 3 guys in the car behind got impatient and they both yelled words....so 3 don't drive off, instead they drove around and looked for him, found him, jumped out and in front of his 2 female friends beat him to death. Effing outrageous.
Essentially, it's the same poor behavior, the same hate, just manifested in new ways. Edit: With some reflection, there definitely is a greater lack of respect for human life, in general, not just in Philly but world-wide.
Look at these startling statistics... Homicides in Philadelphia Since 1988, nearly 9,000 people have been slain on the streets of Philadelphia, affecting every neighborhood in the city. To put that deadly toll in perspective, during the length of U.S. combat operations in the Iraq war, 3,517 American troops were killed in action — and 3,113 people were killed in Philadelphia. During that time period, Philadelphia’s victims were not equally distributed among gender, age, and racial groups. Each year, black men make up a disproportionately large percentage of homicide victims. Last year, for instance,12 white men between the ages of 18 and 29 were killed. Those deaths represent about 4 percent of all homicide victims, roughly equal to the 5 percent share of young white men in the general population. In contrast, black men in the same age group accounted for 48 percent of all homicide victims, but only 4 percent of the city’s population. Overall, 75 percent of all homicide victims were black men. killed by other black men, nonetheless, hence the whole anti 'black on black' violence campaign shit is sickening..I remember my mother telling me I would be lucky if I lived over the age of 27 and/or was without any jail time wish people would wake up and realize that the black community is the one that needs fixing, and stop blaming racist white cops, mexicans or some other scapegoats sure the cops do wrong..there's no denying that, but the black community as a whole brings the shit on themselves. Turning drug dealers into hip-hop icons, is just one of those things that makes you shake your head. Drugs break up families, which is so vital for the upbringing of children, yet we glamorize it in our music. we need no help killing ourselves off a slow death :smt088 guess i need to stop listening to my gangsta rap and stop supporting the downfall. We need more positive hip-hop because whether they realize it or not, kids are in a way shaping their lives around the music they listen to.
