Red Tails Tuskghee Airmen movie

I felt the same way before I discovered the lusciousness of BM. Lol!

I still think that trend is changing somewhat. Especially if the movie has a powerful storyline, known actors and good advance press.

 

Possibly but this country doesn't really like to support all black casts in the theaters other than for meaningless awards. They don't show monetary support unless its black people acting the fool. Movies like Rosewood and Malcom X were fucking amazing but didn't get the support of shit like Harvey Milk or Steel Magnolia. To this day it bugs the fuck out of me that New Jack City isn't considered one of the great gangster movies.but you run into the problem of an all black cast again but amazing story.

Imo, the only thing that's truly going to change this (like other race-based issues) is to educate the younger generations. And I don't mean textbook education. We have to be aware of our own prejudices and how we convey them to our kids. As I mentioned in another thread, it only took two comments, one overheard and one directed at me, to know how my family felt about IR. Those two comments stand out in my mind all these years later. That was as much of an "education" as anything I learned in school.

 

It isn't as much about prejudices...People just want to see a movie that they can relate to.

 

Which is prejudice because based on nothing but color they don't think they can relate. The human experience is so vast polylithic and we have so much more to connect on than race.

Okay, my 3-movie Friday fell apart in the face of the onslaught from $12.50 prime-time ticket prices. Underworld: Awakening won out. Red Tails is slated for today at the "nice price" matinee showing. lol. Review to follow.

 

I saw the flick and loved it. I will see it again. It has a IR as well.

 

I think a movie about Joe Louise needs to be done. But I really hope they at least show good old 40s racism and everyone smoking cigarettes. While as much as I despise Nazi Germany lets face it no one gave a fuck about the nazis killing jews or being evil racists. In fact in WW2 propaganda they just mentioned "he murdered his own people" kind of ignoring and refusing to mention Hitler's insane racial views that was in common with most Americans.

My white grandpa is very honest and strait-forward on how fucked up it was to be a black person in his days. He even admits the things he misses in his dinosaur days of course then goes on to say "but being mixed you wouldn't like it."

Really I want to see red-tails with my grandfather, and see if he thinks its an accurate portrayal of the times. Also Red tails might be a box office hit or a failure. It being by George Lucas alone will definitely attract a showing.

 

I enjoyed it. Hats off to George Lucas for seeing the value in this story and telling it. The script was pretty standard Hollywood, with stock heroes and villains. The racism was made plain, but it wasn't the movie's central theme. The IR love story subplot was done well, without being exploitative. A great cast as well. Cuba Gooding, Jr., Terence Howard, Tristan Wilds, David Oyelowo, Bryan Cranston, Method Man, Andre Royo, Lee Tergesen, the lovely Daniela Ruah, and Gerald McRaney. The aerial dogfights were very well done, courtesy of LucasFilm. Probably one of the highest production value films to have a predominately black cast, ever. One weird thing that stuck out for me, the credits looked like they were from a television show, sort of pasted on the screen. Not important, but given the high quality of the production, it just looked incongruous. Could they have done more? Could they have made the racism more visceral? Could it have been more gory? Sure. But it was great for what it was meant to be: an inspiring Hollywood-style story of good guys who, despite their own troubles, rise above them to face the task at hand and become heroes.

I give it an A.

seeing mixed reviews about it...but like you said, it's nice to see a high budget film with mainly blacks in it...especially if it does well. It means that people are warming up to the idea of blacks in movies. Face it, many people just aren't receptive to us, as scientifically proven in harvard tests

 

Right. My A has as much to do with the points you raised as its quality as a movie. It's no Citizen Kane, but then again, neither were the last 3 Star Wars movies, and I went to see each and every one of those. If I put my film school hat on (I don't actually own one, but you get the picture, lol), I'd probably give it a B-. And I have to tell you, I was astonished at the mainly white audience's reaction at the end: applause. Really.

I wish I could have seen MI4 on an IMAX screen. That would have been a trip. Especially for the skyscraper scene.

 

Good to hear it's worth seeing. I wouldn't expect Lucas to right every wrong or tell every angle within the scope of one movie. If he can get interest and make the prequel and sequel I am sure he will go more to those areas.
