Ok but that is not a logical argument. Are you saying people including you set their moral compass according to what you perceive are the low standards of others? You are advocating an "eye for an eye" in an argument defending those soldiers who according to you somehow uphold your western democratic values and "Freedom" and the indivisibility of human rights. However, you defend a kind of violent and illegal moral payback that is the complete anti thesis of what you are claiming to protect. It is a very slippery slope.
As much as I loathe the Geneva Convention, since most of the wars we've fought had an enemy that did not really follow them, I do agree that it needs to be followed. That convention and it's attempts to prevent war crimes is what separates us from regimes like the Taliban, the Nazis and so forth. Once we start violating that, we become no better than the people we're fighting. That's why we have things like rules of engagement, to remind us that we set the standard and are expected to be better than our enemy.
it's not...but the word honor is used an awful lot with our military, and anyone with a sense of respect for their enemy (and the dead in general) would frown upon what those guys did. i wouldn't blow it out of proportion and equate that to beheading journalists or deliberately setting off bombs in areas filled with civilians tho
While it's certainly offensive/distasteful/mocking/humiliating, urinating on the dead is not a war crime, which is why it is not covered under the Geneva Convention. The Geneva Convention was facilitated is to protect soldiers from TRUE war crimes.
like torture, rape, etc etc this is why the gitmo thing was so popular as much as everyone in the field likes strong, reliable intel, there is a certain way to go about it I don't know anyone that would like to receive beatings for information, lol
"you can get info without beating senseless......you can tickle them." says eric massa (if you dont get the joke....here is the link and read the article.http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/10/nyregion/10massa.html)
Desecration of the dead is covered under the Geneva Convention which makes urinating on the dead a war crime genius.
I'll wait - Find it, genius. http://www.icrc.org/ihl.nsf/full/365?opendocument FYI, the Geneva Convention's main purpose was/is to protect the living. ie: The wounded, the POW, non-military personel, etc. As for the dead : after rounding up the wounded and NOT then searching for dead bodies after you killed them....Or despoilage, OR not burying the body/s....OR not record-keeping the number of bodies you killed....OR not informing the enemy of their deaths....or not leading the enemy to the whereabouts of their deceased's graves - all criminally violate the Convention. Otherwise, very little protection is afforded corpses, except for some of the aforementioned. BTW, genius, as a general rule, when one side fails to follow the Geneva Convention, the other side is also not obligated to do the same. Do ya think the Taliban follows, or even knows wtf the Geneva Convention is??
For the einsteins who are rooting for those soldiders, you should remember that action will further endanger the lives of marines since a moderate muslim might find it repugnant and decide to become radical. In a region where US is known as the Great Satan, you would rather want to have more allies than enemies.
Stick to playing video games. Again, show me it - I provided you with the Convention Act. But you can't - you wont, for you only know how to parrot what your feeble sheeple mind "hears" from talking heads on TV.
What defines one to be better in terms of warfare? I shoot you in the eye but I don't cut your head off after you're dead? Its this religious fascination with the body that makes acts like these grotesque for most. How about rules that ban the unsanctioned occupation of a country that creates these kinds of terrorist. I won't say for sure having people walking up and down your street with heavy weaponry creates hostility but I'm willing to bank that it does.
Closer to Yonkers chump but close enough. You won't catch my Doctoral candidate ass anywhere between Parkchester and Gun Hill after dark lol
In his World War II memoir “With the Old Breed,” E.B. Sledge writes of seeing the bloated, blackened corpse of a fellow Marine on the Pacific island of Peleliu, his head and hands cut off, his severed penis stuffed in his mouth.
big deal, you know the Native Americans used to collect scalps, and hunters wore the skins and bones of animals they killed and i'm sure before them, warriors did the same types of stuff war is hell and it takes a certain breed to fight em it's like eating meat...you don't want to see where it came from, but you WILL enjoy it when it's served cooked on a bun in this case, you enjoy the freedom, luxuries and quality of life you have and not having to fight wars, because there's someone else doing a very dirty job so you don't have to
True...though he did add - "...I never saw a Marine commit the kind of barbaric mutilation the Japanese committed if they had access to our dead.” ...Urinating on the dead is not exactly a new idea. But Maynard Sinclair, a Marine veteran of Vietnam and the peacekeeping mission in Beirut, said the outrage shows the public’s naiveti about war. “I did a hell of a lot worse in Vietnam than urinate on some dead bodies,” he said. “We cut left ears off and wore them around our necks to show we were warriors, and we knew how to get revenge.” Gary Solis, a former Marine Corps prosecutor and judge who teaches law of war at Georgetown University, said the Internet has added a dimension that soldiers in the past did not have to deal with. “In Vietnam, when you screwed up, no one back home heard about it,” he said.
I was surprised to learn of these...(some I knew of) "Before he was king, the Bible’s David was tasked by Saul to collect 100 foreskins to win the hand of Saul’s daughter Michal (he brought back 200). Mesoamerican warfare involved widespread cannibalism, Genghis Khan made mountains of skulls. In World War II and Vietnam, even U.S. soldiers made trophies of enemy body parts."
