    Slavery math spurs outrage

If Fred Got Two Beatings Per Day…' Homework Asks

ABC NewsBy Olivia Katrandjian | ABC News – 15 hrs ago

Third graders in in Gwinnett County, Ga., were given math homework Wednesday that asked questions about slavery and beatings.

Christopher Braxton told ABC News affiliate WSB-TV in Atlanta that he couldn't believe the assignment his 8-year-old son brought home from of Beaver Ridge Elementary school in Norcross.

"It kind of blew me away," Braxton said. "Do you see what I see? Do you really see what I see? He's not answering this question."

The question read, "Each tree had 56 oranges. If eight slaves pick them equally, then how much would each slave pick?"

Another math problem read, "If Frederick got two beatings per day, how many beatings did he get in one week?"

Another question asked how many baskets of cotton Frederick filled.

"I was furious at that point," Braxton said.

"This outrages me because it just lets me know that there's still racists," said Stephanie Jones, whose child is a student at the school.

"Something like that shouldn't be imbedded into a kid of the third, fourth, fifth, any grade," parent Terrance Barnett told WSB-TV. "I'm having to explain to my 8-year-old why slavery or slaves or beatings are in a math problem. That hurts."

"In this one, the teachers were trying to do a cross-curricular activity," Gwinnett County school district spokeswoman Sloan Roach said.

Roach said the teachers were attempting to incorporate social studies into math problems.

"We understand that there are concerns about these questions, and we agree that these questions were not appropriate," she said.

ABC News affiliate WSB-TV contributed to this report.

No matter how many times I come across blatant racist themes, I still get shocked.

This is appalling. It's bad enough that people knowingly or unknowingly pass down their own personal prejudices to younger generations, but you would think that this blatant teaching in the school system would be abolished. :smt011

If someone at the school approved this curriculum they should be fired. Ridiculous. It is the south though.

I agree!! I am a loud mouth in situations similar to this. I would have been down at the superintendent's office first thing in the morning. Screw going to the teacher/principal ... this is a serious issue and I would not wait for them to "investigate" the issue before it is raised to the attention of someone who can actually do something about it. :smt011

"this is history and math combined. Its being efficient in their teaching....I think people are over reacting. Its the liberal media blowing this out of proportion. This will teach young kids to understand how the world operates. " says rush limbaugh

    "Rush is right!!!!" screams paniro

He often addresses personal accountability/responsibility, detests racial crutches that aren't necessarily there, and actually often acknowledges racism. He doesn't partake in injecting racial blame when often the case doesn't merit it.

I often speak up for Black issues, and I often criticize White behavior. When other Whites call me the "white version" equivalent to "bootlicker", I tell them to KMA.
Same thing for the times I speak up for the male gender, invoking the ire of women. As always, character before color.

Dude is incredibly biased. There's responsibility but you have to address the social and systematic injustices as well. Paniro tries to make it as simple as black people are lazy and need to get off their ass and do something about their shitty situation but dismisses the fact that you are twice as unlikely to find a job as black man than a white one. What does a person in that situation do? Create a job out of thin air? He also turns a blind eye to the fact that the police is constantly being used a coercive apparatus to target young black men. If you target any group more than another of course that group looks like they do more wrong. It ingrains an attitude of they must be criminals so lets focus on them adding to the job problem and many them finding themselves locked into a life of crime. I'm not saying that there isn't more intelligent action that can be taken but when you place all the blame on one side then you don't sound like you want to solve a problem you just want to find a person to blame so you feel better about you.

You do the very same thing but you can't see it. You want to blame "the system" which is just a euphamism for "white people." You kid no one but yourself.

The system is white people? You my friend are white and have not one iota of power so no its not blame white people. Don't give yourself too much credit, you are not an oppressor. You may benefit in many ways like I may benefit in certain ways from being a man but neither one us have an real power. The power structure uses horseshit racial issues to divide and confuse us. When I blame the system I know exactly who I am speaking about, an oligarchy hell bent on making this country into a plutocracy where few benefit and most suffer and they use blacks as test dummies to see how far they can go before anyone bats an eye. Like I said actually read some of the stats I posted and tell me you think I'm blaming one side.

The system is a euphamism for white people smh lmbao

When I read your posts and you blame "the system" what I hear you saying is "white people." That's what I meant. You think you don't mean that but that's the way it comes across, and I've read others' posts that say essentially the same thing, so I know I'm not alone. You have a thinly disguised dislike for white people. Who else keeps black men from being employed, in your mind?

Ches that's total horseshit and the only people who ever make such ridiculous comments are Paniro and other posters who believe a preference for white women equals some type of worship. In this moment I have to say now I get why some white people get so riled up when they are called racist for disagreeing with the president.
You can hear whatever you want but I have even implied that shit a little bit. I've said white people are a victim to the system as much as anyone else but not in the same way and not to the same extent. White people get the privilege of being ignorant to a lot of systemic problems in this world since they are lulled into this idea it won't happen to me it'll happen to them mentality. So when members of the oligarchy make things worst for the working class and blacks are hardest hit some can remain in the illusion of their whiteness to believe its not a problem with the system its a problem with the blacks and won't realize the real problem until its far too late. But hey I'm racist so what do I know?
