Because when the ambulance comes to your house, the EMTs don’t know if you paid your taxes or not. They are providing a public service. In this case, the fire department is providing a service only to those who have paid the fee. They are apparently aware of who has paid the fee and who hasn’t when they get a call. Dog forbid, they ever get their information mixed up. This system was set up for failures just like this and more.

On the most basic level of gut reactions, it's abhorent. I felt this way when it happened last year. However I feel satisfied that their policy is and has always been - if human life was at risk, the firefighters will, and do intervene.

I did some research and from what I ascertained, if you live in the city of which these firefighters protect, you do not ever pay a fee. The rural homeowners are not city residents, nor do they pay any taxes towards the city and its resources. However, since they choose to live in another County- and rurally at that- as a courtesy, this neighboring city extends the option to them to pay a fee, so that their city firefighters will cross over and come to your county to put out a fire. In other words, they are willing to expand their juristiction to aid those who have declined to form their own volunteer fire department (which can be done through fundraising, donation drives, etc.) This offer of mutually satisfying cross-border assistance has been available for 21 years.

When this same thing happened last year, the city received a surge of application fees by neighbouring rural homeowners. Out of 900 homes, 700 homeowners have opted to be protected.

Unlike last years case, the terrible irony here is that the homeowners who lost their trailer WANTED to pay the fee, but were exempt from doing so since they didn't own a home, per-se. They pay no home taxes (its a trailer in a rural area), nor home insurance because no company insures trailers as a "home" since they don't recognize them as such.
Thus they fell in-between the cracks in so much that these particular people are not only not residents of the city in which the firefighters protect, but aren't even recognized as 'homeowners'.

The city firefighters did care, but were mandated not to put it out, and the homeowner has said they understand why the didnt intervene, nor do they blame them for it.

BTW, it was the homeowner's cat who saved their lives by pushing at their legs until they awoke and fled the fire.

When you account for one home, yes its $75. But 900 homeowners have chosen to live in a district that has no fire department. Thats almost $53,000. Either they form their own fire department, or pay another city to do the job for them.

In Philly, when the money runs low, our mayor shuts Fire Stations down. In Camden, when the money ran low, 24,000 cops got their pink-slips. If as you say, people don't pay their taxes...services are not just slowed - in many cases, they are cut. Who is going to pay the cops and firemen to come save you then? People who pay taxes.

On a general note, since this happens on a far greater rate, I also wonder what the difference is - in the end - when a bank reposseses a homeowner's home for their inability/or refusal to pay their 'fee' (mortgage). While the circumstances of course are majorly polar, the outcry isnt nearly as loud as when the bank untimately gives a homeowner 2 hours to get what stuff they can muster and dumps the homeowner on the curb, their house gone from them.

Obama attempted implementing this same policy with health insurance. People don't pay health insurance now because they can get the care for free or they may forget or w/e the case may be. Obama's health care plan would have forced everyone to pay in advance so that instead of a house burning down it would be you not dying or going into debt. However, this was blocked by republicans. He ended up placing a worse build to just get it through.

What is more ironic is that you agree with the idea of paying for services and items and yet when the Obama helath care bill went through. Many conservatives shot it down because it attempted to make people pay for the services they use. What a horrible idea? making people pay for what the services they use.

People have to be smart enough to realize that you have to plan ahead for human error. Otherwise this and the health care system we have now shows up.

You don't find it a bit hypocritical that you prefer a system where some people don't pay for their services and get cared for and at the same time you may be agreeing that this guy did not pay for the firefighter service and shouldn't get the service.

They're not apples and oranges, kiddo. If you want to be "righteous", then at least hold some consistency. Better yet, follow your example and stop dicking around with your own neglectful actions. Pay your child support.

Good Luck with that. They're good with letting houses burn down so you know they aren't loaning you any money. Hell, they need all the money they can hold on to in order to bribe their way into that 1% bracket......

Can you get great coverage for your mobile home at an affordable rate? Yes indeed! An application so long and complicated it makes your eyes water? No thanks! GEICO can help you get a mobile home insurance quote in a jiffy through the GEICO Insurance Agency.

Mobile home insurance is similar to regular homeowner's insurance, but it's tailor-made for mobile homes, so you know you'll be getting the right protection. Looking for manufactured home insurance? You've come to the right place — it's the same thing.

Mobile home policies cover the mobile home itself, adjacent structures, and a good number of your personal belongings. Plus, you could get liability coverage to help cover certain types of accidents on your property. Sure it had a great shine, but maybe that kitchen floor was still a tad too slick when the neighbors showed up for that surprise visit!

Why do you not agree with Obama's plan? It provides for the personal responsibility that you believe is important, it becomes truly portable, unlike insurance currently. Please give me some rationale as to why you don't like it, and what alternative is better, specifically?
