talking with a coworker of mine that does bjj not too far from the job. said you pay 70 dollars for 6 weeks where he goes.

the contracts and stuff are supposed to show commitment to the art, and make you really consider how serious you are. I've pondered this shit for a straight month now. It's funny tho when they say bjj is good for hobbyists, then flip the shit with an expensive contract like you're going to be fighting in the UFC lol

may as well be snorting blow

Or selling it to get the money for that shit. 180 is my cable and cell phone bill each month. I couldn't rock with that shit in good conscious.

ive stopped buying ready to drink protein shakes and just fill water bottles with my filter, and add bulk protein powder at work now. that'll save me about 160, until I factor in the increase in powder consumption. It's still a large amount, considering a 40 dollar 5lb tub or protein gives off about 75 servings, compared to 12 servings from a 40 dollar pack of drinks from amazon.com:smt021

with prices like that for a martial art, you really have to start shaping your life around it since you'll be cutting out extras to afford it (not to mention being tied down with the 12 month contract). Instead of paying 60 bucks for video games (which i dont do already), you'll be reading more literature online or finding other ways to spend spare time.

Is BJJ good for actual self defense or just sport? I found judo to be cool for a one on one fight but felt it left me too exposed. What do you think?

BJJ leaves you exposed, just like wrestling or anything else that focuses on grappling for position. Judo can be explosive with many techniques only requiring a short amount of time to execute, allowing you to engage other opponents. Of course, you have to take into account the possibility of a sharp-edged weapon like a knife. Many techniques would go tits-up if someone stabbed you in the kidneys, while you were going for an over-under grip, for example.

I took BJJ to learn something different, but came away with a much more serene outlook on life. All of my fear, doubts and past misgivings (not playing more football for example) were washed away, and I felt like I could do anything. I've actually started opening up more with people since then, and my coworkers are constantly asking me what happened, because I used to keep to myself. Having practical self-defense knowledge was like an additional gift to me. I'm more focused with finding spiritual and mental peace, as cheesy as that may be.

I think something like that is especially important for us, being black men in this country. It takes the edge off.

Anytime a dude from Philly finds inner piece its good for us all lol.

But I do hear you on the inner peace achieved from martial arts. Makes me wish I stuck with it all these years instead of chasing pussy and trying to impress girls.

    seriously

as mentioned elsewhere before, if you get into a fight chances are you'll be fighting more than one attacker, especially with the way these punk-asses are being raised today. You'll be better off carrying an Uzi, than possessing 10 years experience of anything. Knowing that and the fact that the chances of me actually getting into a fight are very slim, I try to justify steep costs with other bonuses, as I mentioned earlier.

Plus i'm 29. If I were older, i'd probably be a tad bit more restrictive. But these are probably my best physical years, and I still want to get the most out of em.

I've always heard that it meant that it was a drug related neighborhood or some shit, but I'm not actually sure.
