Indeed, and I was more or less referencing earlier in the late 19th and early 20th century. You get no argument from me about the fact that black folks have run into far more prejudice based on skin tone than anyone else.

My brother in law came from an Italian family (he's now in his late 60s), and they'd Anglicized their name by translating it to English back when his dad was a kid and first arrived in the States.

Weirdly, I think my ethnicity is something *I* can't hide either, but it's not acted as a negative in my life since high school. I routinely get asked to attend seminars and such on feminism and recently got an invite to one for Women of Color. My black girlfriend said "Well, I suppose fish belly white is a color." ;-)

BW love thugs and then run to nice guys to help them take care of all their unwanted kids. Show me a woman in any culture on earth who doesn't go for the bad boy at some point in her youth.

Well, I don't generally use UB, and that's not how I felt. He just wasn't a good match for me - he didn't get my humor and while certainly not dumb by any means, he wasn't quick witted and I found conversation with him dull in the extreme. He was very pretty. I didnt demonize him at all based on his age, I just found I have more in common with the 48 year old I just started seeing. He's smart, quick, well educated, and while not the hardbody the young one was by any stretch, he's one of the sexiest men I've ever been with.

I thought the young man was attractive and told him so, but told him up front he wouldn't be interested in me (frankly, I still don't see what he found so interesting in a woman my age) - it was a shock to me when he was. But I'm happier now.

I think motherhood is a pretty universal feeling, but certainly most of the BM and BW I know hold their mothers in *very* high regard because they got nothing but love and support from their mothers. I think the BW I know who have children are fierce, protective, loving and take no prisoners. I cannot say that as generally in the case of WW and WM I know - many of them have "problematic" or "complicated" relationships with their mothers. Yeah, I know, I'm generalizing, blame the vicodin.

Edited to add another WILD generalization: In my *personal* experience, albeit limited, the BM I've dealt with have been more respectful in general towards woman, and I always assumed that was because of the amount of respect they have for their moms. I'm not talking about thugs, FTR - they treat no one with respect including themselves.

That's why I said what I said but I think its mainly a result of having to be protective rather just the natural inclination. My grandmother didn't get spit her face cleaning the floors of white people for nothing. She KNEW if she didn't do it my mom and aunt would have to one day. Same thing with my mom. I'm sure she hated working double shifts to send us to private school but she did it to make sure I wouldn't have to when I got older. I'm sure many white parents would do it if needs be but they don't so I don't see it.
And like you said I have so many white friends who have 'problematic" relationships with their mothers and I could never understand it. The only time I saw that with black people was when drugs were involved but like you said most black people experience a really strong bond with "mama" because that's usually all we ever have.
