A little question for DK and those who buy his theory

Nope, I'm not the one doing the judging except where my own choices are concerned.

 

This doesn't really answer Pixie's question, but it might lend something to the discussion. I have had several younger (not in their 20's, a bit older) men tell me that they prefer older women because we are more settled - no drama. Our kids (if we've had them) are older and don't require our attention like a younger woman's. For some, the issue of birth control is a non-issue because the woman is through menopause. If the guy is successful and travels alot, he prefers a woman who is older because she isn't tied to a family and may possibly have more tenure at her job and can get away easier. They also assume she is more financially fit and less likely to need someone ro take care of her and/or her kids.

And, finally, some younger guys like older women because they are experienced. There's nothing like experience.

I do think that guys, in general, and definitely not true for myself, lol, receive mixed signals about what women want in a partner. Just as the media tells women they should look young and fit, the ideal man is exemplified as someone who's super virile, has the looks of Adonis and makes a lot of money. I don't believe that's at all true, though I think that men falsely buy into those notions. I've never found that to be true, and my experience suggests that women most appreciate someone who's engaging, a good conversationalist, is well rounded and attentive. I don't think that most women seek out superlative men either, average is not a bad thing, but someone lacking qualities that allow for a loving and communicative relationship are preferred.

As to people aiming too high, I think that it happens often, and if one female poster here is any indication, to the same exaggerated extent, as it's always about that person. I've always said that in deciding to pursue someone you should always be aware of what you "bring to the table". If you can do that and see that the person you desire has similar "things on the table" then I think it makes sense to go for it. If not, at least understand that it's an uphill battle for there's a significant difference.

As an alternate perspective, I never dated an older woman because I thought that she was more experienced. As a young professional, I dated other professional women my own age, and most were concerned about their careers and didn't have children, so that was unimportant as well.

I found the age of the woman to be the biggest detriment. While the relationship might have been great in some ways, because she had the qualities I desired, I couldn't fulfill my own desire to father children with an older partner. If the man doesn't want children, then an older partner might be great. But, for someone seeking children, it can be the death nil as well.

If you're not both bringing something of quality to the table (and I don't mean money or looks) then there's no relationship to be had, IMO.

Well rounded is good. Attentive is nice to a point, but personally I do like a man who doesn't "hover" and who has his own life and interests. Communication is absolutely key.
