I don't see the big deal about Adele.

  1. I mean really. Someone explain it to me because i don't get the hype. :/

I don't really follow the entertainment business myself, but I do get in touch when my mind is most curious.

To be frank, she's sort of the "spiritual successor" to Teena Marie in regards to her style of singing having a lot of soul and feeling, which in turn shows that the music industry, despite many of their plastic autotune pop sensations, Adele actually can deliver a performance without any technology. In short, she isn't the music industry's lap dog.

Give a listen to one of her songs. Who knows, maybe you'll appreciate at least one song from her.

  3. I have listened to her and i find her highly overrated. Amy Winehouse was doing what she was doing years ago. A lot of people seem to be jockriding her like she just invented soul music or something. I'm listening to Jill Scotts new album right now and it blows Adele's away by a country mile.

Hey, to each their own. You won't get any arguments from me brother.

There have been some artists I've find overrated. Hell, even to this day I still find some popular artists to be overrated, Tupac being one of them.

    I'll explain it. She's good.

Now her album doesn't contain any songs that reinvented the wheel. She is no trailblazer. But she sings a type of soul that most black singers (particularly the most popular) abandoned a long time ago. And her voice is fabulous.

Of course the white mainstream (the white public) always find themselves attaching to white artists what black artists had being doing forever. But if white guys can get away with that for all this time, what's the big deal if a white lady does as well?

No, her style is not really like Teena Marie. Adele's songs are closer to R&B of the late 50s and early 60s. She is not Neo-Soul like Jill Scott. There are some similarities to Amy Winehouse but Winehouse had more of a jazz element in her music that Adele doesn't use. But speaking of Adele and Amy, they aren't the only white female Brits who have been doing soul music. There have been quite a few who have popped up over the last ten years, The Brits (and Europeans in general) have a better feel, understanding and appreciation of old, old, old school R&B than their white American counterparts. At the very least they more readily give credit to their black influences (just like the Rolling Stones and Beatles were more likely to acknowledge the black artists that inspire them than Elvis ever did). Adele is part of that tradition. Don't diss her just because Amy Winehouse did that sort of thing first. That is like dismissing Marvin Gaye because Sam Cooke came first, or the Stones because the Beatles beat them to the punch. Adele was at least a half-decade younger than Amy so what do you expect?

There are highly respected producers in the business who feel Adele is the best female singer out there right now. But everyone has an opinion. The cool thing about Adele to me is that she is authentic. She didn't get a record contract or fame because she is a sexpot or beauty queen. No, I'm not just talking about Brittany Spears and Katy Perry here. I'm also referring to gals like Beyonce and Rhiana (particularly the latter) who would not have half their success if they didn't have pretty faces and didn't wear skimpy clothing on stage and in videos. Adele is on top because of her talent and because people can relate to her, see her as a real human being rather than a sex kitten. I loved the fact that she is successful. She is refreshing. I’m not necessarily interested enough in her to go check out a concert or anything, but she is a person whose success I don’t resent.

She has a great voice, and you're right about Brits & R&B/Soul. Joss Stone is another one who has a lot of talent - I was stunned when I first heard her and she was about 16. She sang like a 40 year old. She reminds me of Janis Joplin in a way.

Thank you!! There is also a duet by Joss & Melissa Etheridge doing a couple of Janis Joplin tunes which is remarkable - and in which she totally outclasses Ms. Etheridge, which isn't an easy thing to do. Note: The baldness was due to a bout of chemo.

    I don't get it either.

  10. Okay, i get all that. But i hope you're aware there are black british soul singers that are just as talented but get no burn. Like Estelle and Chrisette Michelle. But they won't get pushed here in the states because they're the wrong color. Adele is getting burn off what Aretha Franklin and many soul singers now still do.

Btw, one of those blue eyed soul artist Duffy was interviewed in a magazine recently and claimed she was influenced by the Stones even though her whole sound was inspired by the Supremes, Donna Summer and Aretha Franklin. Yet she never gives them any credit. I smell another Vanilla Ice.

I used to really feel and support Jill's music until she publicly expressed her disdain for WWBM relationships.

And the funny thing is, she used her male HAPPILY-MARRIED-to-a-WW friend as the example. Instead of being happy for him that he'd found love (so hard to do), she was pissed with that "what, he couldn't find it with a Black woman, wft??" cop out.

As a result, her music isn't speaking to me, obviously.

Duffy, who is Welsh, is a good singer. I don't think she's Vanilla Ice. Estelle is terrific, but I don't know Chrisette Michelle.

I watch a lot of British television, so I tend to see more British singers than US singers these days. I'll have to look into Chrisette, thanks for the tip!

What really captured my attention about Adele's music is the little Caribbean/reggae lilt that you hear sprinkled throughout... it's a nice stylistic touch that not a lot of white R&B singers use, not a lot of R & B singers use period, at least the ones that I've heard...

Adele sucks about as bad as ..Josh Stone & Amy Winehouse did..

No white woman will ever be able to replace Tina Marie in my eyes... she was unforced in her sound... and 100 percent original..and from Los Angeles (Venice).

    RIP TINA MARIE

I dont know man...just sitting here thinking how wack all of this is...

Black American music is steeped in pain..suffering ...and the american experience (experiment)..

Man I love being black...we are so unique in many ways.... That it gets painful at times watching other people get paid to emulate what we do naturally.

I like Adele, I think she has one of the most strongest beautiful voices of any race. But thats my opinion, Joss Stone is good too. But its all relative, and just depends on your taste.
