Y'all are making me feel even more fortunate. This is why I love my doctor and her nurse. I have never had to show up in person for anything. I can call and leave a message and I always get a call back within 2 hours. She's also really good about realizing that if I don't like something, I'm not going to do it, so she's become really adept at working out creative solutions with me (translation: we barter and negotiate... alot). I'm allergic to darn near everything, so I generally go the homeopathic route most of the time, and she's also very accepting of that, and she's got a good knowledge of alternative treatments. Oh and best of all, she's never almost killed me, so big bonus points for that. If I ever move, I'll have to come back here for medical care because really awesome doctors are hard to find, and I'm not going to look for anyone else.

If that's not disheartening, then I have no idea what is. I'm so sorry that you're going through this much pain. I don't know what else to tell you. :( This is why a revamp of the overall system would be beneficial.

Maybe they just need to get laid. :smt102

My doc has had a couple of good nurses over the years that never caused any problems & always took care of business. The current one is an ass, but the one before her was even worse. I guess I should be thankful for any kind of improvement. I was very happy when I heard she'd retired. I was hoping his wife would replace her, but no such luck.

I've had some bad experiences with other doctors; one asshole damn near killed me & my son when I was pregnant. I love the doctor I have now. He helped me recover from what the other so-called doctor did to me, & I wouldn't trade him for anything (even if he does have some hags working for him, lol).

Thank you, Pixie. It sucks, but what can we do but deal with it? The alternative isn't exactly appealing. It's a good thing we're as feisty as we are.

Thanks, BBW. That's very sweet & I really do appreciate it.

I agree; the system sucks & it needs a serious overhaul.

I come from a family where all the women are nurses and some of them have attitudes because they get treated like shit by a lot of the patients. I understand both sides but I think most patients don't consider what the nurses go through. For as much education as a lot of them go through and then coupled with the responsibility they get underpaid in my opinion. The doctor spends maybe 10 to 15 minutes with you tops. The nurse is the one who monitors and checks up on you for hours.
I guess I'm biased since my mom my grandma and my sister are/were all nurses.

    ....'as much education'??

I'm not going to argue that nurses do get treated like shit sometimes, but I've run into my fair share of nasty, horrible wenchbags that call themselves nurses... but nursing, in most places, is a two year program. I wouldn't call that a lot of education in the sense that they're more important than a doctor. In most cases, doctors are seen as 'the eyes and brains' and nurses 'the limbs', which I think is a fairly accurate assessment. They do work together, and it is their job to check files to see what the doctor has said to do/not do before going on a power trip with the patient.

I also agree that many, many, many professions are underpaid. Police, firefighters, teachers, nurses....it's really sad that the people who do the most are the ones that are most under-appreciated and underpaid.

And Tam, I hope you get some relief soon. :( I'm sorry that you're in so much pain. :(

I don't know if you've noticed but the days of two year degrees for nursing are long dead most need to a bachelors at minimum and a masters (nurse practicioners) to be competitive. Lets not forget nurses have to learn hard sciences and math. They don't get to skate through college learning social sciences which are a lot easier sorry. And I never said that they were more important than doctors just underpaid. Anything that goes wrong with you nurses are always first on the scene unless you're lucky enough to have a doctor close by for some reason. Don't let Grey's Anatomy fool you.
I agree they do work hand in hand I just have a greater appreciation for nurses but like I said I know I'm probably biased.

As far as other professions being underpaid I guess it really depends on where you are in the country because when I hear teachers are underpaid all I think to myself is not here in NY at least. I'm not sure of the pay conditions because of the economy but teaching was the only profession I knew of in my area where you started off at 43k minimum and they allowed you to get your masters on the job and would pay for it if you went to a CUNY or a SUNY. Not to mention they only truly work 185 days out of the year and get 8 to 10 weeks(depends if you teach public or private) off during the summer months. I get that a lot of them have to bring work home but I seriously don't know of any job that doesn't require that right now. When I worked at State Farm during tax season I would constantly have things to bring home so my 60 hour weeks were more like 70 or 80 so its not like they're the only ones but most professions don't give you 8 weeks off and thats not including all the bank holidays most of us have to work and winter/spring breaks. So for what they actually put in teachers do well to me. At least in my part of NY anyway. Same thing with cops and fireman around here. 90k after 5 years guaranteed and nonstop overtime so a lot of these dudes are making well over 6 figures and they get a pension. Half pay after 20 years three quarters after 25. That shit is like lotto payments. No other dangerous job gives you that kind of money after you've retired. But again thats here I'm not familiar with other states.

One of the best nursing programs in the state is at the local community college (odd, I know- but it's waiting list is up to 5 years at this point). Their program is two years. Two. Then you take your boards. Then, if you pass, you're an R.N. My brother became an R.N. in this program. Upon graduation, he, and almost every classmate he had, were offered jobs as far away as California because of the reputation of the program. Nurses who get Master's degrees generally don't actually want to work in clinics, hospitals, and doctor's offices unless they're administrators. If you get a Master of Nursing degree, generally, you want to teach. If you don't, and you go for extra education, then you're going to be a PA. I don't know any nurse who ever went longer than two years, so to say that they all require a lot of education is incorrect.

And I'm already well aware of your disregard for the profession of teaching. Short of making 6 figures- teachers are underpaid and under-appreciated- especially by you. People choose their professions based on their skills and what they like. Some people like children enough to want to teach them, and are willing to work extra jobs to supplement the income they need to survive. I'm sorry you worked long hours, but I'm pretty sure you picked that for yourself. You cannot compare teaching to something like State Farm. Each job is different- just because YOU had to work some shitty insurance job (your choice!) doesn't mean you need to abuse teachers who's schedule is set by the agricultural calendar whether they like it or not.

Teachers also have to put up with people like you who constantly down what they do- especially when they have NO idea, policymakers who've never stepped inside a classroom who try to tell them all the things they're doing wrong and how to do them better, parents who seem to think that teachers' jobs are actually to coddle children and just pass them, and asshole kids who absorb those attitudes from the world around them and treat the teachers like shit. When it comes down to it, the asshole kids are usually the easiest, even though it means you'll probably run into a kid with a knife, or who threatens you, or who intends to harm you in some way- all because the lack of respect they're taught through the media and society for the people who's entire life revolves around working at a school designed to help them get started and ahead in life. The same people who probably started college wanting to be teachers because they were thinking about how much they enjoy children, and enjoy helping people, and were passionate about something.

Yeah, teachers are totally worthless pieces of shit. I see your point.

Why are such a victim? Nothing I said in this conversation was a critique on teachers I'm just saying they seemed to be compensated pretty well for the actual time and work they put in. I never said anything about the validity of their jobs but the term underpaid implies that you aren't getting paid enough for the work they put in for working only half the year that doesn't seem true and if you factor in all the paid time off its like they are getting paid almost a 6 figure salary (not starting out of course).

And my job wasn't shitty it was actually pretty decent but anyone who has worked in a corporate environment damn well knows you don't choose to put in a lot of hours. You better put in a lot of hours if you want to keep that white collar job. And accountants during tax season HAVE to work minimum of 60 hrs and that's on the light side. If I worked for an actual accounting firm like h&r block its normally 80 no exceptions so I don't get where you got the idea where I chose it not to mention there is no overtime its part of your salary agreement.

And please quit acting like every teacher who chose teaching did it because they are all altruistic charitable people. From what I've seen is a lot of teachers pick teaching because they want summers off and job security because a lot of people think that tenure means you can't be fired especially in shitty areas where no one wants to teach. A lot of women choose teaching because they want a job that allows them to be with their kids before and after school.

And by the way since you want to throw the idea of choice onto me since I "chose my shitty insurance job", don't teachers chose their job? So then what's the bitching about?

Oh btw do me a favor and search nursing jobs on indeed or careerbuilders. They require nurses with 4 year degrees now. Your brother became a nurse when there was a massive shortage but NOW the market is over saturated with people who ran to nursing thinking it was a safe profession so with more competing for a job they raise the standards.

Who's a victim? I'm not a fucking victim. I'm the strongest person you've ever had the honor of knowing. I just put out there the reality of the situation from someone who's been there. On this forum, if you share experience as a woman, you're a victim, but if you're a guy, everyone jumps on it as 'real talk'. Fuck that line of thought. I experienced being a teacher, and I experienced people telling me to my face that I was useless, and I still have friends who put up with that shit every day.

And let me tell you, a teacher works harder in those 180 days than any accountant works in a year- INCLUDING tax season. And I can say that with some authority considering one of the math teachers I worked with WAS an accountant...from Charlotte..one of the major financial centers of the country. She thought it would be easier (summers off and all of that), and soon realized that it wasn't the case...but you don't know that unless you do it. So take it from someone who HAS and stop trying to belittle the people that are one day going to be responsible for teaching your children.

I work a white collar job, by the way, and the people who whine about having to work 60 hours a week just to keep it are called 'irritating martyrs', because it's just not the case in 98% of those jobs. A few companies may have that corporate culture, but they're only hurting themselves. The USA is the only country in the world that purports to have people working all of these damn hours but our productivity is at the bottom.

You're comparing a city in Charolette to the financial districts in NY?
You are far from the strongest person I've ever met. Go to a children's cancer ward those fuckers are strong. Or try being a woman in a third world country like the women in my family those fuckers are strong. You my friend don't rank in my top 50 lol.
Notice how I never pretended to know how tough it was in a classroom but you think you can tell me how tough it is to be a corporate accountant Ms. Can't Do Math.
And no one is whining about working 60hr would weeks but that's whats expected these days. Very few people get to do 9 to 5 anymore. We're in global competition companies can't afford to let you go home at 5 and you work for a non for profit by the very definition of your job you don't have the same pressure as a for profit company but I know you'll spin it into another whoa is me situation.

And I call you a victim because you rarely if ever miss a chance to martyr yourself. To make it seem like your life and your situations are tougher than everyone else's. Then when you're backed into a corner you pull the "you do this to all women card". I have only called you and Trixie victims when I felt like that's how you were acting specifically. I don't call the other women victims because I don't see the same world is against me bs that I see from you mostly and Trixie sometimes. Just saying
