Here are a few of my favorites... you know the ones that are just yours? The ones that no amount of break-ups or bad days can take from you? The song that when you hear it, just reaches out to you and says, "I am Your Song - I belong to You..." Edit: When posting your song, please add a little piece/description explaining why this song is important to you (like I have done below - but it doesn't have to be that long or personal)... even if it is only a few words - it will just add so much more to the thread. Thanks so much.:smt049 SA Well, after I busted out of a marriage at a young age, I gravitated toward neo-soul and alternative bluesy kinda stuff, but it was hard to find (especially on the radio as I didn't have funds for satellite or I would have been listening to Howard Stern - yes that's how long ago it was lol)... Also loved my old-school hip-hop of course, and my old alternative stuff from high-school, and was just getting to know classic rock (sheltered background). Really loved anything with a funk-based beat, blues feel, and/or *real* poetic lyrics. I figure a lot of you have a broader knowledge of what's going on in the music world than me, so thought I'd call on your knowledge, and start a new thread. This is not race-based - this is music based. I'll just start with a few of my favorites, and please feel free to suggest some that you think would be an interesting addition... (doesn't have to be hiphop/soul/jazz/blues/reggae, or any of that, but I'm going to start with some of the artists that I began listening to that inspired me to go deeper...) Starting with... John Hiatt - wrote this song for BB King and Eric Clapton... I adore him -my uncle who died of cancer in his early 40's introduced me to him and I've seen him in concert a couple of times... he is WONDERFUL. This is a recent video and his of course a little older, naturally. And an another older gentleman that I just adore, the great Taj Mahal... I worked in a music store and they always stuck me back in the country/blues/"world" section, so I was always playing Taj, Harry Connick Jr., and The Chieftains... anything to avoid playing the new Garth Brooks album lol... they sold me Taj's album at cost and I have kept it with me ever since - comfort to my soul... Now please tell me someone here has heard of this girl... Res from Philadelphia. She was the first one to turn me on to neo-soul, besides Tony Rich (neo-soulish? someone fill me in) and Maxwell... I feel like she belongs only to me, because I'm the only one I know that's heard of her, but she is fantastic. Give her a chance - she put out an album around 2000, and really helped me through the whole 9/11 thing... *also she's hot as Hades ;-)* Another phenomenon from Philly is G. Love, who captured my heart after a stone-cold hottie (BM) in the Psych Dept where I was working as a secretary turned me on to him (and his band)... Too bad I was married (and a naive little 21 year old nymph) or I wouldn't be here on this forum right now - always had a secret crush on that guy - he had great taste in mu-zack (blues mu-zack... lol... G. Love joke) and is probably a heartbreaking prof/researcher/husband/daddy of 3 somewhere right now... Love this video - great artistic/creative quality - watch if you love pin-ups!! xoxo - thank you for this one - I just pictured myself sitting at the edge of the concrete, watching them shoot hoops, in the 80s - I want a time machine. They put me in mind of my other most favorite band from England, The Sundays...
Here are The Sundays... introduced to me by a very depressed girl whose parents had been missionaries to Japan. She had gone strangely goth and I was fascinated - having just gotten away from my parents - this was in 1993. She copied the album "Reading Writing & Arithmetic" for me onto a foreign looking tape which worked just fine on my little radio/stereo thingy ("ghetto blaster/boombox"). Have been in love with The Sundays ever since... The Cranberries a close second...
i love, love, loooooove this song...!!! it brings me back to the late 80's and a group of friends that i used to hang with & the boy i :smt054'd. it always makes me smile
Gotta love Pharrell Williams... looks like one of my (recent) old lovers... Yes I hear those lyrics... Can't resist that face or that body... Imagine if someone were singing this song to you...
loved the whole album...all of it just takes me straight back to the laughs & butterflies...
ohhhhhh...... especially this one. "Can't Be Sure" Thanks Tarshi... I always have it with me but it's been a year since I've heard it. A year (again) since 1992 is a pretty long time...
what can I say but that our beasts find peace within... This song bring up memories of what happened when the Nigerian government introduced SAP policies of the IMF. The policies were supposed to be market driven reforms and the tough fiscal measures known as austerity measures that would help develop our economy. Instead our seasons changed forever, to the extent that the past, and its good times, have become distant memories. Our tightly knitted communities became broken and the fabric of our societies were completely destroyed. Hearing the song, each time, is bitter sweet for some reason, in that it reminds me of growing up, but at the same time, it signaled the time things started to go wrong too.
I wonder.... sounds similar to socialism (and I am not against socialism, just always seems that there are complications)... naija I have heard this old 80s song before, but will never hear it in the same light again... you have definitely brought a new poignancy to it.... Thank you, naija, for an always thoughtful post which brings us back to the world's reality...
O Willow Waly by Isla Cameron (From The Innocents) We lay, my love and I, beneath the weeping willow. But now alone I lie and weep beside the tree, Singing Oh Willow Waly, By the tree that weeps with me, Singing Oh Willow Waly Till my lover returns to me. We lay my love and I beneath the weeping willow, But now alone I lie, Oh Willow I die, Oh Willow I die.
here is one song from the album my old boyfriend introduced me to... Martin Sexton "The American" - it will send you to sleep and not to a bad place... to a very good place... This is "Glory Bound"...God bless him...how he blessed me... The Youtube link does not want to cooperate. But listen to this song - it gets in your blood - as does Martin Sexton - "The American". The artist. The album. It has both entertained me and sent me to sleep more times than I can count. http://youtu.be/_RFWBBMQPsY
