With college football right around the corner the last thing any fan wants to hear about it yet another scandal. But this one could mean the Death Penalty for one of the most iconic programs in all the land. According to yahoo sports a former booster Nevin Shapario provided money, cars, parties, and women among alot of other things to at least 72 former players and some recruits over the last 9 years. Plus it is alleged that at least six coaches knew of all the violations were going on. Now the guy is a convicted felon for involvement in a ponzi scheme but has pics and documents to back up his story. Now Miami a school that has been in trouble in the past could be classified as a repeat offender and if that is the case that is a huge problem because that opens the door for the the ultimate punishment. NCAA Death Penalty: Institution can be barred from competing in the sport involved in the second violation for either one or two seasons. In cases of particularly egregious misconduct, a school can also be stripped of its right to vote at NCAA conventions for four years. The NCAA has said the past that it would not impose the death penalty but that was 24 years ago. With the current enviroment of scandal and the level that this could go to lots of people are calling for it. http://sports.yahoo.com/investigati...miami_booster_details_illicit_benefits_081611
I'm not surprised. I'm not really a fan of the Hurricanes but, I still hate to see this happen. I can't judge the players though, when I was that age - and in the military - I did some stupid stuff also, I just didn't get caught.
Recently met an older brother (early 50s) who played football for my alma mater. Man, some of the stuff they ply these young black men with once they decide to play for a certain school would blow your mind.
Some of the accusations are really wild. This guy reportedly put a $5000 "bounty" on Tim Tebow, payable to any 'canes player who knocked Tebow out of the Miami-Florida game. I can understand hating on Tebow, but wow!
Yep, it's crazy, buying $5000-10,000 dollars top of the line Miami & Vegas prostitutes for players. Damn, nobody bought me a prostitute. Oh shit, I forgot I wasn't that good & was engaged to beautiful woman at that time. Glad they've got all the hookers in the world, lol.
:smt043 Good thing you remembered. In terms of the program, it will be interesting to see what the NCAA does. If it imposes the "death penalty," then any sadness about it will come mostly from a place of nostalgia. Miami is not the program that it once was by a longshot.
A pro-Miami (but nevertheless interesting) piece on the scandal: http://http://eyeofthehurricane.net/wordpress/2011/08/17/separating-fact-from-fiction-the-nevin-shapiro-scandal/ The most helpful thing to Miami may be the passage of time:
Luke Campbell a longtime supporter of the U and a guy that has had his on NCAA issues in regards to pay for play has a response. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMUSgoyf_5I
