That isn't remotely true. Do I sound contemptuous of most men? I'm about as hardline a feminist as you'll find, and I adore men.

No, you absolutely do not.... and that's why I hate so much that you accept the label of feminist. In accepting it you've also unfortunately accepted the reputation of a lot of the man hating women who do so in the name of 'feminism'.

I have a much better label for you "My Little Schnookieookieookums"

I hear you. Don't be sorry. It was not meant to be. He will find someone who is willing to do that stuff. Just not this gal

You do sound like you have a genuine love for justice but to be honest some of your patriarchy comments are bit exhausting and hard to swallow especially for bm living in America. Just saying....

In this country the patriarchy works against us and you being white definitely works for you.

oooh I like that one, Jaisee.

But on the feminist thing, I figure it's my responsibility to properly define the word for people who don't get it. Sort of like some racists think all black men are hoodlums. Clearly you fly in the face of a lot of conventions and stereotypes because those stereotypes are *wrong.* So are the stereotypes of feminists.

I'm pretty good at flying in the face of convention. Keeps people on their toes ;-)

Sure it does, DK. We all have privilege of varying kinds, and one of mine is being white. Being smart, for a woman, can be a two edged sword. Privileges me in some ways, works against me in others. Being a woman does not, in general, work to my advantage. Hell, there's legislators all over the country who are still debating whether or not I have a right to control my own BODY.

There's so many Congressmen in my uterus there's no room for a fetus.

Yeah but can you understand my pov. You're trying to explain privilege to a black man in America. What privilege do I have over you? There is no coercive apparatus that is government funded beating you, you aren't as likely to be unemployed as I am, not as likely to be arrested or put on death row for the same crime as I am. I just think on this board the idea of patriarchy looses its steam when talking to a group just as opressed if not more so than yourself.

Just curious.,. why feminism instead of egalitarianism?

I'm not playing the oppression olympics, that helps neither one of us. I think that BM and WW have more in common than is generally understood, and it's incumbent on both of us to try and understand how we're privileged and how we aren't. You don't have Congress debating whether or not you're "too slutty" for birth control, or whether or not your body belongs to YOU or whether it's simply an incubator. That shit matters. If I cannot control my own body, who the hell is going to hire or promote me? I could get pregnant at any time, and need to take time off.

Within my own lifetime, things have changed a lot for you, and for me. But because you aren't getting beaten for registering to vote does not mean that the country is free of racism. The fact that I am now allowed to work at something other than being a nurse or a teacher does not mean there is no more sexism either.

Rape is still epidemic and we still talk about it in terms of victim blaming - "She shouldnt have been there, she shouldn't have been drinking, she should never have worn that blouse."

There's changes still to be made on the issue of racism in this country, big changes. And changes to be made on the issue of sexism as well. That's all I'm saying, I'm not trying to say you or I have it better or worse. We're both still limited by the WM culture. And those limits need to go, period.

Egalitarianism assumes all people involved are well informed and contribute equally. Unfortunately for as people there are 1000 dummies for every intelligent person there is. Those who choose superstition over logic.

In part, because of where I've seen women start from when the feminist movement kicked in. And in part because of issues like reproductive rights, which in my eyes should be a given. But the *goal* just like the goal of anti-racist movements, is egalitarianism. The patriarchy, or kyriarchy if you prefer, hurts men and families too. If I can't make dollar for dollar what a man makes for the same job, then my family, and by extension my spouse, suffers from that lack of income. The idea that only women can be stay at home parents hurts men who would *love* to be the primary caregiver, but who feel pressure to be out having a career. The idea that women should do the majority of the in home work even if they work outside the home hurts men too - it means that by the time she hits the bed, she's done double duty, and is probably too tired for sex, and a wee bit resentful that she had to get dinner, supervise homework, baths, and clean up while he sat and read the paper.

There was a big to do in Canada recently. A woman was raped and the police officer said it was because "she was dressed like a slut"

    Ouch

There have been Dress Like a SLut marches all over Ontario as a result.

Really 2011 and she was dressed like a slut. smfh

Yeah, that movement has spread worldwide. There are Slut Walks all over now. I'd have gone to the one in Denver but it was too damned hot to wander around in the sun all day. The goal is "The difference between a woman who is raped and one who is not isn't her wardrobe. It's the presence of a rapist."

I agree with this post but I won't let you skate on the patriarchy stance you took earlier. It was a little insensitive. I don't benefit in the privilege of being a male at least not here because I am black first and foremost and in this country after being here as long as white folk thats still considered ethnic/forgeign not included. But whatever we can bitch all day but it rarely if ever changes anything
