You have a point that white kids and black kids are running around looting. On TV, and to a casual observer, these are the images that present themselves if you choose to interpret them as such. And like you said in another post, the riot is more complex, and I agree.

Yet, it won't be overstating the issue to say the riots are happening in areas that have a lot of black population. Neither would it be overstating the issue to conclude that other minorities like the Pakistanis, the middle easterners, and recent arrivals like whites from eastern Europe complicates the white and black thesis.

So far, in the reportage, I keep hearing something like communities. I keep wondering who are these communities? Are they the white British? Or are they the other colours of the spectrum that make up the "mosaic" of the British society?

I have a feeling that the British society is in denial. The denial that we do not have problems like America does. But when you start having riots in the streets and people start getting embarrassed for their country, then there is obviously a problem that has been cooking, but has not been out their in the open.

The police do a lot of racial profiling in that country. There is so much stop and search. The urban music and its tenor is quite similar to the anger that is common in America rap. The problems of urban youth and police searches, the idea of driving while black is also common in the British society.

The cutting of deficits, the spending cuts, the tripling costs of education, and cuts in social programs affect communities where there are predominantly ethnic minorities. It is just not that people have "underclass mind" or have "disregard for all morals and human life ," it is more likely that opportunities that allow people to nurture the morals of healthy mind and good morals and good citizenship are becoming rare.

Hmmm, kinda reminds me of the 1992 LA riots. All they need is for someone to come out and say "can we all get along" and the riot will stop. Trust me on this one, it works like a charm.

If it were only that easy...

I was here for the '92 riots, shit was no joke. Smoke in the air, areas looking like a war zone, curfews, National Guard roaming around, gas stations with lines long. Just utter chaos.

It's a stinking world because there's no law and order any more. It's a stinking world because it lets the young get onto the old, like you done. Oh...it's no world for an old man any longer. What sort of a world is it at all? Men on the moon, and men spinning around the earth, and there's not no attention paid to earthly law and order no more.

Fuck the Queen. I hope they drag her dead body in the streets of London. My problem with these kids going wild, if you're going to make a political statement and riot, then don't destroy your own shitty neighborhood. Go to the uber upper class community where privilaged fucks who have been opressing your ass are living and burn that down to the ground. If I am rioting, I am not gonna riot in poor shitty minority south central LA neighborhood, where folks struggle daily to make ends meet, but will drive down to Beverly hills and cause havoc.

    Burn motherfucker burn!

Seems the riots have moved now to the midlands and northern cities; Manchester, Birmingham and Liverpool.

There has also been an arrest of someone trying to get gangs to move up to Scotland (organising via Facebook). It seems a number are organising targets via phones and facebook :(

It's shocking that some of the criminals are as young as 10!!

On a positive note, there have been many volunteers who have helped to clean up the mess that has been left behind.

I live about 3hrs drive north from London and so far (touch wood), my city has not had rioting. Thinking more about others on this site and some of my friends whom I know are close to it all.

Maybe I should just hop on a plane and spend the last few weeks of my vacation away. Or maybe I could win the lottery and spend some time in Barbados :)
