Those people were dumb and not properly trained. We should be allowed to defend ourselves.

I swear people like you make me laugh because if someone broke into your home you'd wish you had a gun. You wouldn't throw your hands up and say oh well

There's a big difference between a city the size of Seattle, or Denver, or Portland Ore, etc and a really rural place like Vermont or South Dakota. Huge difference. St Louis would qualify as a big city. Burlington VT, which is the largest city in the state, has less than 43,000 people. St Louis has almost 3 million people in the metro area, 300,000+ in the city itself, density in the city of over 5,000 per sq. mi. In the metro Burlington area, which contains about a third of the population of the entire state, you've got about 3,000 per sq mi.

I've never understood this belief and justification that *some* Americans have when it comes to bearing arms and the ease in which there seems to be in uttering words about shooting to defend what is theirs. I am grateful that I live in a country where I feel safe and I know that my neighbours do not own a gun....matter of fact I only know one person who has a gun and he is a police officer.

The keyword you have to look for is FEAR and this is what drive people to literally buy into certain products. Crime went down, but gun ownership rose significantly. Think owning guns had anything to do with crime decrease? Noooo...it's more to do with people watching TV and allow their Fear of Crime to dramatically go up. So what do they do? Invest in a lot of "safety" tools to protect themselves from "unwanted" people.

Also, black people are considered part of that reason of fear.

Well in your case, being an attractive female with some busty...assets, you can easily ward off a harden freak with your looks. And hey...with you being shorter, you can always knee him in the balls.

See, I'm not advocating that you shouldn't have a gun. I'm personally a gun owner myself, but you have to learn to be able to defend yourself at close range and a gun won't be able to save you at that proximity. Besides, you simply need to work out and tone yourself and you can fair better in combat.

Tarshi, I'm right there with you. It seems that places like the UK and where you are which have tighter controls over guns have a lot less gun violence, statistically.

Guns, quite honestly, scare the hell out of me. I'm aware of two people who died being accidentally shot by family members (and yes in both cases, there were other family members who witnessed the accidents). No guns in my house.

Some people are very comfortable around firearms, and some clearly are not. Fortunately it's not compulsory that you own a firearm, so if you don't like them, don't buy one. I was brought up to know how to use one responsibly, and growing up I remember there were always a couple rifles stacked in the corner of the parlour and my grandfather had a .357 Magnum in his bedroom & a shotgun in the gun rack in his pickup, and all were loaded at all times. I would have never touched any of them, nor would any other child in my family, because we knew they weren't toys and adult supervision was required should we desire to shoot one. It should be required that anyone purchasing a firearm demonstrate that they know how to use it properly and competently. If you can't hit the broad side of a barn, it's not going to do you any good even if you manage to have the nerve to use it.

I have no problem having a gun in the house, as both my children are also aware of how to use one responsibly. I also have zero problem shooting someone should they enter my house without an invitation. I value human life, however if you enter my home without an invitation as far as I'm concerned you deserve what you get, and if I kill you in the process that's on you. Self-defense and defense of my children and the people I love are my highest priorities in that type of situation, and I'd shoot an intruder without hesitation, and without an ounce of remorse.

If you know how to use a firearm well, it's your best option against an intruder IMO. A blade requires that you get close enough to do some damage, so useful if you're sneaking up on someone but not so effective if you have to face them, and frankly I'd prefer to shoot someone from cover at a safer distance. I had a cousin who detested guns and insisted on keeping a baseball bat for self-defense, which IMO is equally stupid as you have to get close enough to hit the intruder, and if that happens to be a man, and you don't get lucky enough to take him from behind, there's a very good chance he'll take it away from you because odds are he's got greater upper body strength. I remember my grandfather and my uncle trying to talk her into getting a handgun instead of the bat and my grandfather told her that the only thing more embarassing than being disarmed, was getting beaten to death with your own weapon.

Bottomline, whatever you're comfortable with, and know how to use well, will likely be effective for you. If guns scare you, then there's no point in owning one as you're unlikely to use it. Get a dog and an alarm system and you'll likely be fine. If you aren't planning on breaking into someone else's house then you don't need to worry about whether they have a gun as part of their home security plan. Some states have concealed carry laws, Oklahoma is one of them, however that doesn't mean the majority of people are packin', so I think your chances of being shot by some random loon wandering the street channeling their inner Dirty Harry are slim.

I don't know the precise answer. Intuitively, I would think that any large urban area, similar to Chicago in size or larger, would experience greater numbers of break ins. I would have to look at the what's behind the numbers, the actual cities themselves. I certainly wouldn't assume that it's a function of the gun control laws only, that's a typical NRA type response.

I would imagine that hardened criminals do respond better in a situation that is familiar to them. For most people, being victimized is a once in a lifetime experience and there's good reason to think that these folk might not respond well to the pressure.

The question is what is a justifiable shooting. The laws vary by state and you might find it surprising that citizens end up being charged with crimes or homicide too. Owning a gun doesn't always mean that you can use deadly force to stop an intruder into your home, anymore than you can set a bobby trap under your windows to fend off home invaders that may have robbed your home several times before. What's the price of one innocent life because some person fires an errant shot and a bullet misses its intended target and strikes a bystander. What's the price of an innocent life when a lady who's carrying a gun in her handbag sits in down on a counter in a restaurant, the gun discharges and kills an innocent bystander. How many times have we read of small or even older child finding a gun and accidentally discharging in the presence of a friend killing them? Ask any of those victim's families what they think about allowing people to randomly carry or own guns.

You can't honestly believe, given the average person, that even a majority of those who buy guns EVER shoot them after obtaining a permit to own and carry them. For those people, it's simply a security blanket, and most are not trained or practiced at using their firearms.

It may be fixed for you, but not for me. I think that reaching for a phone might be less perilous than a criminal seeing me reach for a gun.

What you call knowledge, another person might consider fringe rhetoric.

Tarshi, please understand that its NEVER spoken in ease, and its most likely to defend their life.

If you think it is ease, here is a 57 yr old woman on 911 who didn't want to kill her intruder...for 10 minutes she held him at bay while she waited for the cops...who didn't arrive in time as he broke her door down. You hear her keep begging for the police and imploring she didn't want to shoot him...:(

    She's devastated by it.

Here is another woman who was at home when an intruder came in. She turned her cell camera on and told him to leave. He did, but not before gathering her electronic equipment as she filmed him. A few minutes after he left, he returned and raped her.

    Her cell footage -

A 53 yr old woman exiting her shower was grabbed by a rapist with a kitchen knife and as he raped her with the knife at her throat, she got hold of her gun and shot him dead. Here's her 911...

Here is woman being stalked by her ex..he breaks in as she begs the cops to save her..even when he charges her, she's begging him to stop strangling her over and over...so she shoots him.

And here is an OLD BLACK COUPLE on 911...someone breaks in, and the dispatcher doesn't seem to take her word for it, until her 70 yr old husband shoots the intruder during the call. Its not funny, but the old man is cool as heck as he says " I shot him"
I had to cheer for gramps, sorry.
