I'm still sorting through my opinion on this. In a way they have a point, because while people may say by default white scholarships "are a given" every day...as we see though, there are actually firm stipulations to receive a scholarship.

I will add though, that just when I think I've seen it all, clearly I haven't.

I'd say more power to them and wish them well. However, it's pretty pointless considering that other ethnic-based scholarship programs tend to give away scholarships regardless of a person's background. They are pretty much inclusive nowadays. So really, this white's only mantra doesn't make much sense.

I don't in theory have a problem with it, but we all know what's motivating these 'white men' scholarships; a group of ignorant white dudes are pissed off by the idea of minority/gender designated scholarships, as if minorities are over-represented in college(!!), and are trying to jam a stick in the eye of those who strive for diversity on university campuses.


IMO what they really want is someone like Jesse Jackson to go thermonuclear and call these scholarships racist, which I really believe is the motivating factor for conceiving these white men scholarships.

Funny how not only are the advocates of these scholarships probably racist, but also misogynist.

White women who wanna go to college can't get any love from these cats??

Ironically, as the U.S. becomes more racially diverse and the total number of minorities outnumbers Whites,( Whites used to outnumber all minorities COMBINED), maybe this whole 'white men' scholarship will have more validity.

There have been "Whites only scholarships" or “non-black only” for at least the last few years at Historically Black Colleges and Universities.Tennessee State University, Jackson State University, Alcorn State University, Mississippi Valley State University, Alabama State University and Alabama A&M University and others have been doing this.

There are higher learning institutions that are classified as HBCUs with White enrollments above 80% of the student population (Bluefield State University in West Virginia 89% and West Virginia State University 84%). Over ten percent of the HBCU population, over all, is now white. Those white students have the same right to any scholarship as a black student does by virtue of just being students as far as the schools are concerned. Special scholarship are offered by HBCUs to entice more White students.

 

That's pretty much all it is. Whites, and more specifically White men, receive the majority of awarded scholarship funds in the country. Yet that isn't enough for them. They have to bitch and moan because they don't have their own race specific scholarships. Even though less than 2% of scholarships in this country are even race specific to begin with.

It's the same mentality when they complain about "Well how come Black people can say the N-word and we can't?!? Reverse Racism!!!"

It's the same mentality when they complain about affirmative action in the workplace and "quotas" (which are illegal anyway) even though the black unemployment rate is double the white unemployment rate.

It's the same mentality when they complain about whites only being charged with hate crime laws (even though they're the main perpetrators of hate crimes), yet never complain about racial profiling, racial sentencing disparities, police brutality against minorities, and a bunch of racist nonsense that either works in their favor or against everyone else.

It boils down to white privilege and a deep sense of entitlement. Blacks can do it so we should be able to do it too. Blacks have it so we should be able to have it too.

Can't believe they just had a study come out that shows whites believe they're discriminated against in this country more than Blacks. Un-fucking-believable. Then they'll sit around patting themselves on the back over "How far we've come" like the majority of them had shit to do with it.

*sigh* It's 10 minutes to the 4th of July (which I don't celebrate anyway) so I'm going to try to calm down now....
