Welt Online, one of Germany’s largest daily papers, is considered to be a conservative voice of the citizenry. The paper is also now famous within the sports blogosphere as the rag that allowed Peter Schelling to turn Dirk vs. the Heat into Dirk vs. black guys who have tats and “wrinkled faces,”

A few snippets from the article

"The European club system has since appeared to advantage. The contingent of Dallas are four players who have learned there: two French, one Serb and Dirk Nowitzki."

"That street ball, threaten Rap and ghetto chic and the commercial success of the sport, has recognized the league itself years ago. At that time the players were still dressed with gold chains and hung in the gangsta look: baseball caps, schlabberige pants, long T-shirts and sneakers were open standard."

"The wide – white in the majority – aware American public takes this shoddy outfit but with street gangs and the mainly black rappers scene here. The organization wants the NBA, the basketball bothered as a family sports marketing for all. Therefore, a dress code was enforced. The players must now appear in a suit and tie the game."

I think the guy is trying to make the matches between the Mavs and the Heat a racial one. People shouldn't fall for it.

germany just feels like they won an nba title...i think many european young men dream of coming to the states and playing in the nba...

putting a suit on someone doesn't take the ghetto out of them...

i would like to see you try...i didn't make the statement to be offensive

lippy was just stating a mere fact...let's take allen iverson for example...he is one of my favorite all time nba players...he not only didn't want to practice but he damn sure didn't want to wear a suit:mrgreen:

I'll throw this at you guys.

I, like 99% of the non-Miami Finals-watching American public, rooted for Dallas in the Finals and could not be happier for Kidd and Dirk to get their rings (even if they beat my beloved Purp & Yellow on the way:rolleyes:). But it would be dangerously naive to miss the racial undertones in the way the two teams were described. Apparently, Dallas were "blue collar", hardworking and played with grit and Dirk was a good "leader" while the Miami Heat were described as arrogant, athletic and not a good team. Does it sound familiar? Wel, yes it does. Take the 1980s Celtics and Lakers and you have the same phenomenon. The Celtics (led by mainly white guys in Bird and McHale) were the hardworking, gritty and smart team while the mostly black Lakers squad led by the trio of Magic, Kareem and Big Game James were the "Hollywood" team, flashy and athletic but not "fundamental". Never mind the fact that Magic Johnson is the best fucking PASSER (the most fundamental skill in the team-oriented basketball) in the history of the NBA. Or that Kareem Abdul Jabbar in his 30s, well past his primewas still dropping 24 $ 12 on fools like he was still in Wisconsin.

Look, I understand the nature of the NBA Finals is to create mystifying narratives, the old David vs Goliath thing. The NBA (and its corporate partners) is a business, first and foremost. They exist to make profits, of which the NBA Finals forms its most lucrative event. In their quest to maximize their money-making potential, they love to create narratives to compel people to watch. We saw the same thing here - Miami were the Big Bad Bullies everyone hated but couldn't stop watching, while Dallas were the wily old veterans living out the dream of a last real shot at that elusive title. Obviously, everyone roots for the underdog, so it stands to reason people rooted for Dallas.

Now I hate the Heat as much as the next NBA fan, but forgive me for not thinking Lebron James is Beelzebub's seed. All the guy did is break Cleveland's heart in an ill-advised television spectacle and essentially declare himself the second coming of John the Baptist (admittedly foolish, no doubt) and folks want to make him Josef Stalin or something. Never mind that greedy owners like Art Modell, Clay Bennett and the Maloof Brothers have done far worse to communities in America, killing jobs and dividing communities for the sake of the dollar. I don't see governors writing up proclamations against their rivals declaring them honorary (insert whatever state demonym of choice). This unprecedented hatred for any athlete in the modern era has gotten very ridiculous, and I dislike Lebron and the Heat.

I am under no illusion Lebron James has not exactly ingratiated himself to neutral observers with his petulance and aloof "my life is better than yours" remark his dumbass made after choking in an elimination game. But the racialization of Lebron (and black athletes by extension) is equally shameful and needs to stop.

Nothing else needs to be said. Great post.

I anted James to stay in Cleveland but I didn't hate him for leaving. I also didn't hate the Heat. The Heat added needed excitement to the NBA and that was a good thing.

Props to Dirk but I rolly eyes at reading revisionist garbage about him being a more complete basketball player than LBJ. James plays great defense and offense. And on O he is a gifted scorer and passer. Dirk has always been simply a brilliant scorer. He played out of his mind in these playoffs and I'm happy for him. James played scared in the Finals and I'm disappointed in that. But James has always been a better overall basketball player than Dirk.

For real. Dirk plays his own brand of 'ghetto' b-ball.

Taking those rainmaking, rainbow 25 foot jumpshots off his back leg is street ball at its finest.

And what's more ghetto than a seven footer thinking he can handle the the rock like a small forward??

Dirk is stuntin' every time he steps on the court.

At least that German dude who wrote that article was up front about it. You got a bunch of people here in the States playing stupid about the racial undertones in the coverage of that series.
