Back to the topic at hand, Aussies have taken over. I love SA and love spending time there, there is so much more to South Africa than people think. I do prefer Botswana though.
Make SURE you go to Bots, I mean, MAKE SURE It's only 45 mins flight to GC from Jo Burg or you can drop straight into the key tourist joints.
I lived in South Africa for a summer and I absolutelty enjoyed it. The locals are still adjusting to the post-aparthied government but the overall experience was great. Cape Town was gorgeous and the night life was ok. The "Cape Coloureds" were beautiful. The only downsides I saw were the interactions between black and white people. The South African whites carried a superior demeanor over the SA blacks and the black carried themselves with a subservient demeanor. They had chinese hair shop like they do here in America. The drug of choice over there is a marijuana/heroin mixed drug. I forgot the name of it. Brothels are legal in Gauteng Province as long as they are licensed. Liquor is super cheap. Their red wine is excellent. Educational opportunities are slim to none for poor people because South African students only can get public education for free up to the 8th grade. They have to subsidise their own high school education. The distribution of wealth is extremely unfair. Whites are the minorities but they control mostly all of the land and the international commerce coming in and out of the country. HIV is alive and well over there. The positive aspects outweigh the negative aspects of the country though. I love South Africa. I have entertained the idea of living over there for a while.
Botswana on the other hand were blessed in that they did not suffer from the brunt of colonialism, and do not have the post-colonial legacy and suffering that SA does. SA is strong, beautiful and vibrant country though. You see things improving amongst the rising middle class- and one does exist, but you are right about the distribution of wealth. Botswana has been able, in many ways, to more evenly distribute the benefits of its very rich diamond mines amongst its people. Education and healthcare is very good and many students benefit from being sent overseas for tertiary education. Without going too much into the economics of it, Botswana is very much a credit to Africa in this respect. I am not so sure about the current president, and have been unsure and a little concerned about a now slightly perceptible trend to curtail some freedom of speech. ANYWAY, I'm rambling. However, I've never found any problem in South Africa as a white person either. I'm open and that helps, I also speak Setswana which might help sometimes (and though I know Afrikaans, choose not to). It's what you make of it. Admittedly i mostly hang with music community there, and haven't liked the attitude of some Boers when I did a bit of networking for my own way more stuffy profession. Much is to be improved, but many Africans in South Africa also know there are plenty of white South Africans and those who have adopted it who also walk beside them on the long road.
If you're taking a trip to Africa, you should drop by Tanzania and Kenya too. The Maasai Mara, in Kenya, is a place that is dear to my husbands heart, he highly recommends it and I highly recommend Tarangire National Park, The Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara in Tanzania.
