The name is just as "silly" as Batman, Spider-Man, Green Lantern, Captain Marvel, Wonder Woman, Superman, The Punisher and many other names in the more popular DC and Marvel brands. Spawn refers to "birth" which is the meaning behind it and it makes a lot of sense. I never read the comic books, but I've managed to dig into a lot of the characters and story. It follows a Judeo-Christian motif, and the religious references are pretty much centered, which is most fascinating. It goes a step further with the "End of the World" aspect and there are higher forces than God and Satan (M.o.M aka Man of Miracles or Mother of Existence). I actually enjoy the more serious and grittier approach of Spawn and portrays itself better as well as the characters.
He's perfect for the game, but they didn't really incorporate him into the story all that well. Shame. They could have included him in Story Mode once you've defeated the final boss and a quick cut scene would allow you to challenge him.
I read the first couple of issues of the Spawn comic back when it first came out because of all of the hype due to Todd McFarlane the character and the whole beginning of Image Comics thing that was going at the time just to see what was up and the name Spawn was a shortening of the term Hellspawn in the comics. McFarlane did indeed use the religious references for inspiration for the character as you stated and may have decided to call the character simply Spawn due to the birth reference, since the character is "reborn" after being killed.
Okay, tell me something I don't know now. And the religious references are central to the Spawn universe actually. Not just for the titular character.
Yes of course. The whole thing's nothing but religious reference through out. Even in the spin off series and characters they have done off the series.
There was a Spawn and Batman crossover by the way. I can't seem to find the online comic of it. But I hear it was interesting.
My nephew had the comic when it came out back when. I didn't like it. Batman was played as a thug. Way off character.
To each their own. I'm not one to get into comic books. Never saw the appeal of it to begin with. I've always been a gamer. Just completed Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks again, but using Liu Kang as the character. Fun game actually.
Really not all that much difference between comics and some of the video game characters & storylines. A good many comic artists & writers also do work as video game designers & story game writers.
That's not the point. I rather invest my time actually experiencing the quests from the likes of Link, Mario, and other video game characters as oppose to try and immerse myself in ink and flipping through pages.
I understand. I get into the games I play for the same reason. I've just always liked reading in general though. I don't read comics anymore, but prefer to watch comic related movies or cartoons now.
That's cool. You know what's funny? I always had the impression that me immersing myself into the gaming world made me the sort of person I am today since my earlier years revolved around them. Predominantly Sega and Nintendo.
