After 30 million deaths... 1% of Caucasians are immune? Wow. How would you even know who, so they can be rounded up and EXAMINED! They can be potential life savers! That's him.
Interesting feedback on this in the comment section .... A few... http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_thelo...an-functionally-cured-of-hiv#mwpphu-container
Good article Kuno, I read this earlier today.Several years ago I remember a story about a man who lived in St. Louis who according to the news report was being flown around the country by several pharmaceutical companies each one wanted to take a sample of his blood but, he was never told why. He was under the impression that he had some horrible disease that would one day kill him. After he refused to give anymore blood and traveling he was told that he had blood cells that could fight off HIV, malaria and perhaps some cancers. He was of Nordic heritage, most of those who have these traits have ancestors that made it to the region thousands of years ago.

Now here's what I don't get how can they say definitively 1% of Caucasians are immune and not more Africans since their bodies have been fighting the disease the most. How do they get that particular number? I'd love to read the research. Well this is great news for wealthy people who are sick.
Now that's interesting Bo. I do question why a man would allow that treatment to continue for so long without asking pertinent questions, however, I wonder what came up in his blood to even facilitate such an inquisition into his blood. Did he take an HIV test and something jumped out at them? Also, as it was noted in the comments and crossed my mind also...you just KNOW the Big Pharms are going to take a huge hit (loss) if a cure is found. Now a Vaccine, they may still make a mint...though I'd still be terrified to get it like I am with flu shots (although, the vaccine may just be the antibodies of the HIV immune) so who knows where this all might lead.
HIV Used To Cure Genetic Blood Disorder This is an example of how populations around the world suffer from various inflictions and how the human body can react to protect that population. It may make you less susceptible to one disease while making you more susceptible to another. It also can make one groups nightmare a reprieve for another.
Because it appears to stem from this... '...the trait may be passed down from ancestors who became immune to the plague centuries ago. This Wired story says it was more likely passed down from people who became immune to a smallpox-like disease..."
I remember that he asked his doctors but, he said he would not get a straight answer. He was taking legal action against some of those involved. I do not remember how it was discovered. The pharma companies and doctors did not want to speak for obvious reasons.
My goodness, how did they even make the correlation?! HIV cures a rare form of anemia?! These people are the true rockstars of life. As someone noted... "Too bad research scientists aren't pulling in as much income as pro athletes or movie stars, these careers really make the world go round." Ooo, on second thought, let me edit that a bit. I don't like research that use/abuse animals, so damn, I'm torn in my awe.
Correct the disease known as HIV has not actually been around that long. 1930 and 1940 are not long enough times to develop immunity in human populations. Also since it did not originate in humans but, rather monkeys the human body has struggled to fight it off. The human body is not pre-wired to shut it off.
My God if that ain't the truth. To be fair most of them do get paid pretty well at least here around NYU and Columbia. They got assistants making 50k right out of college.
True, their value far exceeds their pay. Science and math are so neglected in our society. We celebrate people for all the wrong reasons it seems.
Me too but they usual use animals whose numbers are over abundant but then again as I've been obsessed with mortality lately I have to admit it's shit to expiriment on living beings that are aware of pain and have feelings just for human advancement. I just found out recently we're not the only ones who mourn our dead. How crazy is that.
The fact that we live in a world where Kim Kardashian can get paid millions just because she exists is fucked up beyond comprehension.
I was responding to your HIV immunity questions "(why) not more Africans since their bodies have been fighting the disease the most." I believe the article's explanation I posted in reply shows the reason why is because the "HIV immunity gene" actually has nothing to do with an HIV immunity gene, but rather a plague/small pox immunity gene. Right? Am I reading that correctly?
BINGO. And she's only been at this game for three years. Three years of a road-to-researcher's life isn't even a college degree yet, AND he's accumulating loan debt by yr 3...smh.
Yes, you are right. The small pox disease is similar and therefore persons who have that immunity may have an immunity to HIV as well. I thought someone (not you) may be wondering why there is no known actual HIV immunity gene generally found in Africa despite the prevalence of HIV there.
