Ribbs, Indy 500's first black driver, breaking ground again

Twenty years after breaking new ground at the Indianapolis 500, Willy T. Ribbs is preparing to set another precedent.

And just as he did in becoming the race's first African-American driver in 1991, he's beginning at the grassroots level. Ribbs is back as the co-owner of a self-named, start-up Firestone Indy Lights team featuring Chase Austin, who aims to become the first black driver to qualify for Friday's Freedom 100 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

If that succeeds, expect Ribbs to use it as a springboard toward being the sport's first black regular team owner.

imagine being able to pick a driver, team, all the stuff you do in video games.

id like to own an NFL team too...same deal...imagine being able to make upgrades to a real stadium, hire coaches, staff, players, etc, etc.

 

I would have never guessed.

I'll watch Indy over NASCAR but in terms of motorsports I'm more Formula 1 or AMA Supercross.

NASCAR is nostalgic for me, even though I'm not this factoid guy about, I been watching it on tv since I was 8 or 9.

 

i used to like playing the NASCAR video games

i had one for PC that allowed you to race a full grid of 40+ drivers, all human. It was pretty realistic and took a lot of discipline. I caused a lot of wrecks and people used to scream for my head, lol. Funny how hard it is to keep a straight line at 150mph. One small deviation in the pack and you'll send someone flying, followed by your ass being kicked out of the server.

takes a lot of skill to do what they do.



that's a screenshot of the game (nascar 4..back in like 2003 or something). stuff like that would happen if players thought they were playing an arcade game, where you could slam and bump a guy all you want, and nothing would happen.

the gamers took that real seriously also, as races were ranked and servers were full of honorable racers.

i used to get too aggressive in the corners and would try to juice my way through the pack, only to slightly bump a guy and send her car spinning accidentally, lol.

 

If I could get a nascar team...I would put 22inch dubs spinning chromes on that bitch.

 

See now, that's why they don't let black people through the dooras it is lol

i do like to play racing games tho

i started with this on my NES





the PC version from 2003 took what you see there, and just multiplied it by 10. you could adjust everything and those adjustments usually made the difference, when going up against 40 something other players on a server. Love PC games for their devotion to enthusiasts.

That's not practical, Goodlove. The tires and wheelbase on the race cars would have to be smaller.
