Ed Schultz has been suspended from MSNBC for calling conservative talk show host Laura Ingraham a "right wing slut" on his syndicated radio show.

Schultz opened his primetime MSNBC show on Wednesday apologizing to Ingraham, MSNBC, his family and viewers.

"It doesn't matter that I was on radio ad-libbing," Schultz said of his comments the day before. "What I said was terribly vile."

Schultz met with MSNBC management earlier in the day on Wednesday, and said he offered to take himself off the air indefinitely and without pay. The network said the suspension would be one week.

"I have embarrassed my family," he added, before turning the show over to substitute host Thomas Roberts. "I have embarrassed this company. The only way I can prove my sincerity in all of this is if I never use those words again. You have my word I won't."

Schultz said that he tried--unsuccessfully--to reach Ingraham to apologize personally.

Network brass released this statement before Schultz went on the air: "MSNBC management met with Ed Schultz this afternoon and accepted his offer to take one week of unpaid leave for the remarks he made yesterday on his radio program. Ed will address these remarks on his show tonight, and immediately following begin his leave. Remarks of this nature are unacceptable and will not be tolerated."

The "Ed Show" host joined MSNBC in 2009, taking over Keith Olbermann's 10 p.m. slot after Olbermann--no stranger to network suspensions--left the cable channel earlier this year.

I heard about this. I watch MSNBC constantly, and I gotta tell you, Ed deserved that. He should know better!

The right wing is the cause of our current economic problems though. He should have replaced "slut" with another word that's less offending.

In this country collectively, we're conditioned to believe that Republicans are at the every least, half right on all issues and deserve respect and consideration, regardless of what they say or do.

Wow! There's no way I can describe it other than wow. And I thought it was Lawrence O'Donnell who would use that word. Then again, he's colorful and careful with his words.

More proof Liberalism is a mental disorder! When you lose arguments with facts, thats what ya do, call people names. And MesSNBC wonders why they are the lowest rated cable news network.

    Check your facts, kiddo.

Plus, Faux News is the only station that like to twist information and give idiots an audience. Well, this is what happens when the majority of Americans choose to remain woefully ignorant and paranoid. This isn't name calling. This is pure observation.

Opps, my bad, i guess they moved up ahead of Joy Behar and Dr Drew, there is something to be proud of:smt005. Compare their ratings to Fox news, hilarious. When Comcast took over MSNBC, they told Olbermann to resign or be fired due to his name calling and low class. Looks like they have another person full of hate to deal with. Sorry,I guess we all cant feel that tingle up our leg.

    Wow...get over yourself.

None of the news stations are great, but I've been in the middle of one of Fix News' falsified stories...and that was way back in 2004. They haven't changed- in fact, they've gotten worse.

Besides, just because something is in the majority, doesn't make it right. Slavery was once accepted by the 'majority', Jim Crowe laws were accepted by the 'majority'.

You want REAL news, tune into BBC World News- they know more about what's going on in the US than even we do thanks to the crazy news stations we've got going on in this country.

i hope fox is paying you well, btw in a country as ignorant as america, ratings aren't the best measure of intelligent debate. hence why fox is # 1, led by hannity, o'reily and beck.

Amanda, don't forget it is Liberals who changed the laws against interracial marriage and dating. I have not seen no conservative fighing against Jim Crow and Apartheid. They mostly supported those oppressive systems and did nothing.

You have to read between the lines. But let me simplify it for you...

    Popularity =/= Better

Yes, CNN and MSNBC doesn't quite have the same audience as say Fox News. But you have you remind yourself that the majority of people in the US are stupid, panicky, and fear-driven cretins, so of course if they are looking for misinformation and awful commentary with tasteless characters, sure they'll gravitate towards Fox News. That's what separates Fox News and the rest of the media, they're quite good at catering to the woefully moronic.
