The system sets up that you have to get a degree or start your own business. like at the 8:00 mark loans will kill america. being debt free in life is the only way to go.

to me to steer the debt is to realize that going to yale for a degree in teaching is stupid due to your rate of return will be negative

That and if you're taking loans, be sure to plan WAY ahead for any financial measures BEFORE you get into college. I guess working in your junior year in high school would be beneficial. And if you received an allowance at an early age, be sure that your parents can help you invest in monumental wealth.

you could go to a technical/trade school, and get a diploma for a 40-50k a year job in the field that you trained for(surgical technology in philly for instance, generally pays 35-42k a year entry level with yearly raises and pay grades + tuition assistance for degree pursuits). Unlike degrees tho, they arent as versatile. While many jobs just want you to have a BS in anything, many don't share the same sentiment for a 'technical' diploma in anything. For instance, an IT job won't advertise for a diploma in any field, but may advertise for a degree in any.

If college isn't for you, then don't go.

I'm so sick of these videos about how bad college is- sometimes, it smacks of the attitude of 'I didn't/couldn't make it, and therefore, college is evil, a waste of time and money, and also...THE DEBIL!'

Such wise words my good woman. The fact is all college isn't bad just like all college isn't good. It's up to you as a student to figure out what's in demand and go out and seek the training to get that job at a reputable place for training. I read an article about some girl who was a Priceton grad and couldn't find a job. The article went on and on about how tough the job market was even for people who went to ivy league schools. They failed to mention until the end that shorty went to school for English. Which is such a big piece of why she couldn't get a job. What the hell does a BA in English prepare you for. What skill do you posess that is marketable? Shit that same girl could have gotten a ba in nursing at a state school and been much better off. So the moral of the story is American kids need to wake the fuck up and start studying what's needed not just what intersts for the moment. Unless they're filthy rich then it doesn't matter.

Surely you don't think it's that simple, right?

I love how the median income has barely risen, (in comparison to the consumer price index), since about '82, yet the cost of a college education has soared. While at the same time, many people claim that the college education you receive for that cost, is sub par.

I wish I could find the article I was reading the other day where they went about explaining how the student loan bubble was the next to burst. There are so many people out there who have accrued quite a bit of debt because they're not finding salaries/work comparable to their education level.

The premise at one time was, "go into debt now, knowing in the future you could pay off that debt and actually get ahead, because of the investment in your education." Now we're going into debt to pay for education and never getting out of it.

It's not as simple as saying "College isn't for me so I won't go" because the joke that college has become is effecting our country as a whole. The point of videos like the one posted is to educate people about this and let them know there's other options then the college one that's been shoved down their throats for years.

I know around here, Temple Univ hiked their tuition dramatically. Everybody is feeling the economy pinch.

so true, and the ppl who say it are rich and went to college themselves, so they are living proof of the benefits. and most statistics show that to be the case as well.

yeah I heard the same thing on a business channel talking about the cost/business of college.

You just have to be wise in choosing a college. are you getting the bang for your buck in regards to the degree you are getting.

Im a big advocate of getting an education. Im glad petty pointed out that there are tech schools to go to. I should have better stated higher ed (college and tech schools and junior colleges). people are hung up on nike schools instead of making wise decisions

I was thinking the same thing. Instead of trying to find ways to bring college costs down or choose a cirriculum thats more in demand people would rather throw their hands up and say fuck it. And the dudes usually promoting this shit wouldn't dare allow their kids to skip college. Fucking hypocrits

I went to college and my family was hardly rich. No it wasn't a Big 10 or Ivy League school, maybe people think they're entitled to such an education and when they can't get it, they hate on it. Many of these new-media millionaires don't have degrees anyway.

Yeah the vast majority of upper middle class people do as well as millionaires. The best way to do well is to learn a business and that requires some degree of formal education because now employers aren't hiring non college grads even for fucking office temps anymore so people need to wake up and pay attention

yeah the ones that diss college generally speaking are church going folks . I hear it all the time (especially the pastor) say "oh you get a degree and become all uppity now. well you are above G-d......"

that kind of talk usually is a code phrase you think you are better and Im jealous of you or they are just dont want to go to college

if you know someone, as always, you may not need as much credentialing. Replacing the whole idea of 'who you know' is the college degree. And sadly right now, even that's starting to flake. If I hear one more guy say 'avoid law school' im going to wig.
