the guy at my training academy claims they wipe down the mats, and spray the showers with a crazy anti-microbial solution, but I dunno....

after looking at that shit (and the fact that someone farted in my face, while I was posturing up in his guard), I'm thinking about getting a refund and stopping all of that manly grappling on the floor (okay so maybe not really)

I just started my ATT membership again. Looks like I'm going to be bathing in a tub of boiling alcohol after every class now.

    Thanks :(

And people wonder why I'm fully clothed with a baseball cap, a t-shirt and sweat shirt and long pants year round at the gym. Omg, for a germaphobic person like myself, that stuff is beyond disgusting to watch.

That's one of the reasons why I work out at home with my own equipment.

lmao..one of my coworkers that got me started down the path of bjj, said that his son contracted staph from rolling. His son said his elbow felt funny but thought it came from the rolling (you know as well as me that rolling can leave you hurting, if you roll with a half decent partner). Later on it started to feel warm and he ended up in the ER getting puss drained.:smt022

I shake my head in disgust when guys do 30 minutes of kettlebells, then a 1 hour class of bjj, head right to the lockers, change clothes, and leave. That's some funky ass shit. Some of them dudes are heading straight to work afterwards, lol.

you don't have to roll with people to catch that shit. I can't blame you for wearing clothes and carrying your own spray bottle if you did. I never did that when I used to work out at a gym at Penn State, but thankfully I never caught anything either. A lady that worked out there also, used to carry a blue spray bottle and spray EVERYTHING before using it. I never knew why. lol

In my gym they have large spray bottles of cleaning/antigerm solution placed throughout the gym. Members are "encouraged" to wipe down equipment but you know how some people behave. So, I usually wipe down padding on equipment before I use it. I remember one guy recently, who was sweaty, drenched, sitting down and using a piece of equipment I was on, and he didn't ask if he could work in with me. I told him that I was using the equipment and he went to walk away. I said, "excuse me, I don't want to work out in your sweat" and he cleaned the pads. The nerve of some nasty people.

    lol

i was 18 or 19..young, dumb, and jockish to boot. Nothing got wiped down before or after I soaked it in man-stew. I'd go up in there with my roommate, spend about an hour/hour-30 minutes, change, go back to our apt and play madden (i mean study)

I forgot my towel yesterday and was to lazy to go to the front desk for one, I used a dirty towel off the floor to dry off....After viewing these pics, bad decision.

    Ew dude

they hold towels hostage where I go also. They got so tired of me asking for them that they decided to leave them up front. I don't pack my own because I don't drive and don't need the extra encumbrance.

I think that, although you can pick it up from other sources, staphylococcus (most forms) live on our skin as a normal part of our "bacterial flora". It's only when we get cuts or abrasions and the staph gets inside us that it causes a problem. So, you're carrying it around with you anyway. No one, necessarily, has to give it to you.

Agreed! There's a guy at my gym that works out in BARE FEET! He's got his warty-fungus-nasty-assed feet all over the mats and some of the machines. Totally grosses me out. So I do my thing and then do all my mat work at home.

Interesting...ringworm on the other hand is very contagious via skin contact. That's the other big thing and can spread throughout facilities like wildfire

Ewww...yes ringworm can. But it's nothing serious, easily fixed.

Still a pain in the ass and a sign that the gym and the guys you roll with are slobs.

It's not a sign they're slobs. You can get ringworm from a lot of places and it has nothing to do with your hygiene. I know vet nurses who've had it, and they're certainly not slobs. They're extremely clean and careful at work, but still they managed to get that pesky little fungi, because they work with animals that have it.

I think it's more to do with people knowing they have it or not, and treating it appropriately. If you know you have it, you have a responsibility not to share it about.

Please tell me where your gym is located so that I can make sure never to got there. I can't believe that they would allow anyone to work out barefooted. It's not safe with weights around the gym and definitely not hygienic. Yuck, the idea of even seeing someone's alligator-crusty, fungus infested ugly feet is repulsive.
