Did you actually read what I wrote? I never implied that all Kenyans (even though I'm Jamaican and used my Jamaican family as example) or any other groupl was superior to anyone. Your example of Indians coming to this country doing well in comparison to their impoverished brethren was horrible.

    1. My family was very poverty stricken when entering this country. They cleaned homes and drove cabs. My father didn't go to college until he was 31 and worked his way through without scholarships or aide because he wasn't aware that was available to him. So the rich family back at home supporting you through school doesn't apply. Try again.

    2. If you actually read what I wrote I said that I think many immigrants come here and fail to understand the effect that slavery and jim crow had on black people here so its not as simple as they may think because they're fighting horrible mental barriers. Did you copy and paste that response because I don't think you know how to read that well. If you did that dumb ass response would have never been typed.

    3. Fuck all you cosigning lame niggas.

I don't think he was trying to take a shot at you. The way I read it, he was pretty much saying the same thing as you've kinda said earlier.
Anyhoo, the msg was- it is not right for foreigners blk to look down on African Americans, at the end of the day the MAN look at us and treat us the same anyway, I think that was the take home msg.
The WM has been doing divide and conguer for hundreds of years, so it ain't new. You got to have UNITY in the community to beat and take down the MAN, you know what am I sayin'? lol.

    Of course I did.

I think you misread my comment actually. I wasn't saying at ALL that you believed those things. This was about the African immigrants you mentioned with a superiority complex and your fathers belief that partially reflects that same complex, remember?

I choose my words carefully, but if at any point there was the implication that this was directed at you, my apologies.

I also used Kenya and India as examples. The examples were based on the same line of thought that I have come across from people that believe ALL Indians/Africans/(*Other) are smart and successful based on the ones they tend to come across and with very little context.

I don't see how such an example is horrible, when Indian/Afriacn scholars and politicians have pointed out the very problems I mentioned plague those places today.

The overall sentiments of my post in regards to Black(or 'person of color') immigrant superiority complexes of course applies to Jamaica as well.

To me, maintaining and promoting such bigoted notions are what is really horrible.

I never said your family was rich or lazy, nor did I say all immigrants are wealthy. Try and read through my post again, you missed a lot.

    Look for 'qualifiers'.

    The broader point remains, however.

Those able to 'legally' travel abroad tend to be in a better position than those that cannot afford to. Otherwise, we'd see a lot more people from certain areas of the world coming into the States for a better life if it were that simple.

The fact that your father was able to come here, or even those immigrants in my own family, says a lot. Not necessarily that he was rich, but you don't have to be, in order to be in a better state or have more options than those around you.

I already acknowledged you said that in my own post.
I'm now wondering if you actually read it.

Again, the post wasn't even specifically about you or what you believed but rather the immigrants you mentioned and your family that subscribed to the same level of smugness, while disregarding the reality that there are some Blacks that are successful and some that aren't.

It's that simple and it's the same for Jamaica or any other country.

Not sure how you turned it into an attack, but I am sorry you saw it that way.

    You are correct.
I was sure I worded it that way, too.

Now I am a bit confused by the reaction, but oh well.

    Thanks,

    Your father of course.

You said that he came here and educated himself, but didn't know why there are plenty of Blacks that haven't. Partially playing into the African Immigrant superiority complex you mention.

    I hear you.

Blacks have been shinning shoes and cleaning toilets long before your parents arrived.

My Black American parents were poor, on welfare, in the projects, yet I (and eventually them too) was able to "make it" in terms of education and career.

My point was that your father needs to recognize that he isn't the only person of color that can 'make it' through difficult situations in the U.S., and yes there are plenty of Black Americans that haven't...but then again...there are also plenty of Jamaicans.

We're not that different, so no need to beat our chests when we 'come up' Jefferson style.

    Hardly.

Being one step above the average person isn't just measured in monetary gains. It can be based in will and spirit.

Your parents were one up on the Jamaicans that wanted to come here but couldn't. You cannot deny that fact. I know plenty of Jamaicans and Trinidadians that have told me how tough they had it. How many friends wanted to be here but couldn't be.

If any poor person from a third-world country could come here legally, all persons from a third world country would come here legally.

    Ask yourself...why can't they?

What separates those who do, from those who don't?

Could it be related to what separates successful Blacks from those that aren't?

Even still, there are PLENTY of immigrants coming here from countries that are impoverished but their families are considered wealthy even by those terms.

Knock off the 'poor immigrant' propaganda, because it doesn't always apply.

    Well...okay then.
I think this was a pretty civil discussion, but fair enough.

    Peace...

And it is right for African Americans to be mean to Africans? I tell you some of you make worse comments than white people and i have had some made to me here by way of rep or blatantly here calling me savage and all that shit so please don't make it look as if you guys i mean African Americans are saints and i have realized children of black non-African immigrants who were born here don't normally do that but its rather the slave descendants who do that smh

You are drawing an absolute distinction when rather, the truth lies in a fuzzy blur. How do you know that African immigrants didn't fight for human civil rights when that occurred? Did they take a black poll of who's who in marches and at the polls? Free Africans didn't just begin immigrating in the 70's or 80's. They have been landing on these shores since the turn of the century or even prior.

So if we are to ignore those facts and accept your point that African immigrants didn't fight for rights but benefit greatly from them, unless you were a civil rights advocate adult in the sixties, neither did you, and you benefit just as greatly.

Both modern day African Americans and African immigrants have African ancestors in common, so you have no idea if Appiah's ancestors were ever brought here, even though he wasn't born here. Do you know your ancestry, Flaming? For all you know, you may hail from a lineage of free African immigrants.
