(Associated Press file ) Spring snows mean you can bike and ski in the same visit. (Aspen/Snowmass | Dave Amirault) Skiing in Colorado's high county isn't over yet. Aspen Mountain will reopen for Memorial Day weekend, May 28-30, for the first time since 1995 and will remain open on the weekends as long as the snow holds, Aspen Skiing Co. announced Thursday afternoon. Although it closed for the season April 10, Aspen Mountain has a 71-inch base as another storm blanketed the central and northern mountains this week. With a base of more than 94 inches, Arapahoe Basin ski area announced last week that it would be open daily through June 5 and then reopen for summer skiing for at least two three-day weekends, June 10-12 and June 17-19. The state's other resorts have not announced plans to reopen. Many have been closed for more than a month. Aspen Mountain will open 25 runs and 136 acres of mostly intermediate terrain served by the Ajax Express chairlift. People who still have their 2010-11 Aspen/Snowmass Premier, Premier Silver and 6-and-under passes can ride for free. All other passholders will be charged: $19 for adults ages 18-69, $15 for those 70 and older, $13 for youths 13-17, and $10 for kids 12 and younger. Single-day lift tickets are $32 for adults ages 18-69, $25 for seniors 70 and older and youths 13-17, and $15 for kids 12 and younger. Arapahoe Basin is including free spring skiing for those who buy their 2011-12 season pass. Snowpack in the basins of the Colorado, Yampa and White rivers pushed passed the 200 percent mark of their 30-year averages this week.
I remember when I first went skiing, I couldn't ski for shit and kept falling down. My ego was severely crushed when I saw a little girl who couldn't be older than 7 skiing with so much grace. I cried and walked my ass down that big ole mountain.
this is the first time since 1995 that a mountain has (re) opened after closing for the season...we have received so much snow in the mountains they couldn't resist...normally we would be headed for the lake memorial day weekend...instead we will be headed for the mountains for a weekend of snowboarding
