Nearly half of Detroit can't read

    no offense, but what the fuck are you blabbering about?!?!?! This topic is in regards to Detroit natives that can't read. It has NOTHING to do with immigrants.

    That's not what functional illiteracy is, a functionally illiterate person can actually understand the words they read, but they're just not capable of interpreting a simple text, that has absolutely nothing to do with being able to speak a certain language, you won't be functionally illiterate if you go to China, you simply don't speak the language, whereas if you're functionally illiterate in the US you're gonna be functionally illiterate in any other country or language.
    The article is referring to AMERICANS who can't read well, not immigrants, I don't know how you got this idea.

    i think you're posting past each other...

    Empyrium, you're right about what the article was referring to, but ArmyRanger was making a separate point beyond what the article said. In his supplemental point he was underlining the value of the auto industry (and, I believe, all unskilled and semi-skilled manufacturing) in providing good wages for the uneducated, up to and including, those workers unable to communicate in the language of the workplace.
