A robbery attempt I faced today

As I type this post, the day is May 13th, 2011 and its 8:12pm EST.
My altercation happened this morning at 7:30 am while I was walking on my way to work. Four guys walked up to me and they rushed me. My back was on a fence and the smallest of the group claimed to have a gun. They ran my pockets and asked me to give up any cash I had or else they would shoot me. I wasn't afraid, but the persisted that they were going to kill me. I heard one of the guys say "Just shoot him already" and the guy with the gun I hadn't seen, but made the motion he had it in his waistband retorted that "he didn't want to kill me over nothing."

I told them I didn't have any money, but when they ran my pockets all they found was my work schedule, my cell, and a pen. I demanded they give me my cell back and leave me alone and the guy who said the "just shoot him" remark threw my cell across the street and into the front yard of the housing project I walked into. I carry an over-the-shoulder bag and they asked me what was in it. I told them nothing. All I had in it was some notebook I study out of on my lunch break. So the biggest guy in the group tried to snatch my bag from me and I snatched it back.
The guy sucker punched me in the lip, busting it open. I turned to him and grabbed him by his shirt and punched him dead in the face. The punch dropped him. When I saw him on the ground, I ran up the street.

The guy who threw my cell chased me, and the whole time I'm thinking; should I just outrun him? Should I lure him away from his buddies so I could drop him too, then run? Or maybe this guy has a weapon too? He chased me for half a block and the guy who exclaimed to have a gun called him back, saying "He's gone man, its over." I turned my back to see the guy who chased me walk off to his friends and walk down the street. So I lost my cellphone battery and my watch which must have fallen off when I ran.
Seeing my blood on my hands angered me, but its possible they could've had a gun.

I flag down a police officer and filed a report, which cause me to be three hours late for work. I have a swollen lip from the sucker punch but the gratification knowing that I dropped one of the bastards.
I told myself I would not live in fear. The greatest feeling of today was the feeling of fearlessness I had. If there was no gun I would've fought all four of them.

They attempted to rob me, and they left with nothing. I dropped one of them. Charges are being filed against them, but I don't know who they are. Hopefully the police will have pictures of them. I could spot them in a crowd of 100.
They were looking for a quick score, but I stood and fought as much as I could in that situation.

I'm sorry for the long post.
    Shawn.

You are so courageous!!!! I love the way you kept your wits about you and kept thinking about the gun, and LOVE the way you triumphed over that situation by decking the guy and bolting.

Wow - that was like a scene from a movie although I'm sure this stuff happens more than some of us will ever know, with more disastrous results.

So very glad for you that you did not suffer any more serious damage and that you are doing okay. I hope you remember that moment for the rest of your life and that it leads you to make bold choices because you KNOW who you are and what you're made of.

Sensible for you to file a report. I hope they catch the fuckers.

My hat is off to you! Thanks for sharing your story with us.

Glad to hear you're ok. But you could have seriously been hurt. What if they did have a gun? What were you fighting for? Pride? Your cell phone? Notebook? All easily replaced. Your thoughts should have been of loved ones, and the possibility of getting seriously wounded or KILLED. Loved ones are all that mater in those situations. I don't mean to sound like a lecture, but I lost a friend to a similar incident, all over an ipod and some sneakers. I pray that viloence like this will end, but we need to remember what is most valued and important in these times.
    Be safe.

Good to see you on the side of the living black. Buy some pepper spray, brass knuckles, and practice "situational awareness" so you can size up motherfuckers like Jason Bourne.

Sonny you have someone watching over you for sure.

I am glade that nothing worse happened to you, life is too precious and your story made me shed a tear...

Although I think that perhaps handing everything over is the better way to go about it,,, I am glade that you feel triumphed and was able to sock one of them to the ground and get away.

Thank goodness you are alright though,,, did your lip need stitches?

This is way to common in our communities bruh. It's always some young punk mutherfucka who feel like he's entitled to take some shit that doesn't belong to him just because he has gun. I know that this type of coward ass behavior if frustrating but you didn't handle that situation right at all. I had uncle that shot in face with a pump because a nigga wanted his car and he refuse to give it up. All my uncle had to do was let the nigga take his car (which this nigga took anyway) and he would be alive today. My friend Meach was shot and killed over a fuckin coat. He lost his life over some off band ass coat that didn't really cost him anything. My man Sick got shot up because some bitch lied and said he did something that he didn't even do. He could have straighten shit out with the dudes who killed him but he didn't. Over the years i've seen good black men throw their lives away for absolutely nothing. Here it is you could have got your stupid ass killed over a bitch ass phone, your work scedule, a pen, a notebook, and your lunch. So basically you risked your life for some shit you could have replaced the same day? You got to be one of the stupidest mutherfuckas on this forum. You're blessed you ran into some weak ass niggas because that situation could have ended very ugly. I know some dudes that would have killed you just for not having no money. But swinging on them and talking back would have definitely got your ass killed. You lucky to still be alive.

It's hard to know what to do in the situation until you're in it.

I still think he judged the situation right, and was very brave.

I think his whole story made up. But if what he says is true then he's a stupid mutherfucka. What he did was the wrong thing to do. He could have got his ass killed for some bullshit. If those dudes would have shot him would you still think he used good judgement?

I agree! Let them take what you've got and walk away with your life. I know you didn't have much on you, but you can get a new phone for pocket change that works okay for keeping in touch.

Look after you. I'm sure no-one in your real life(or on here) wants to find out one day you were playing the hard man and got hurt over a phone or a bit of cash.

Damn, Sonny, I'm sorry that happened to you. About 4 years ago I got mugged walking to work. I had my work uniform on and my PSP (PlayStation Portable) in my pocket and a dude ran up on me from behind and had me pinned up against a chainlink fence right down the street from a busy metro station wrestling with me for it. Initially I resisted, but I didn't know if he had a gun or knife and I knew my life wasn't worth some little gadget so I told him to take it and he ran off. What sucked was there was another dude about 40 yards behind who watched the whole thing go down and didn't do shit to help.

Unfortunately this shit happens way too much in our communities. I've known people killed over stupid shit and you could've lost your life for easily replaceable things. I'm glad you're still with us, but if it happens again, just let it go man. I know it can be hard to swallow pride when you're threatened, but survival isn't always about being tough, it's also about being smart. Again, I'm glad you're (relatively) alright.

I can't say that I was ever badass. I never participated in most of the shit my family and friends was involved in. While they were out robbing and bangin to make some chump change, I was working for my father. When niggas was back and forth to jail, I was going to school. Now the reason I get so much respect out here is because I done punished a few niggas out here with the hands.
