Wow I was playing nice, but since you called my favorite musician "emo shit" I'm gonna have to make you look stupid for your ignorance. Forget Nirvana and the best album of the 90's I'll address that later. First off, are you mentally retarded kid? Have you ever even listened to Cobain's lyrics? Most of his songs were about being an outcast, loner, and depressed person. A.K.A Emo You know his song "Lithium"? He got the title from the metal that's put into anti-depressant drugs. Didn't Cobain kill himself even though he was rich and famous? If that's not Emo then I don't know what is. Not to mention he left his little girl to grow up without a father. Is that the heavy shit "real men" do? Nick Drake>Cobain For your own sake please don't be stupid enough to say otherwise, dork.
Cobain's lyrics were about NOTHING, they made absolutely no sense, even he said at one point that his lyrics didn't make sense.
---faints000 Add in Micheal Jackson, Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye...and our list is about the same. mmhmm mhmm mhmm, man!
Sad lyrics alone do NOT an emo song make. It's a specific approach to the music that makes it that. Nirvana is waaaaay too heavy to be categorized as emo.
I never labeled Nirvana as emo I was only talking about Cobain. I just think it's funny that he insulted a musician who he knows nothing about by calling him "emo". Then in the same post described Cobain as "heavy shit for real men". Cobain.....the guy who killed himself because he was depressed. Ironic, no? Anyway I have no problem with you, and I don't want you to fight this guys battle for him. I'm waiting for that idiot to come back and respond himself.
Don't get me wrong, I really respect Kurt Cobain, he had a personality of his own, I even like some of his songs, but let's get real here, the guy wrote some of the worst and most uninspired lyrics ever ... Polly wants a cracker?, I love you I'm not gonna crack? no... No matter how you put it, those are crappy lyrics.
Again you assume I don't know about Nick Drake. This is what gives you away as a white guy, the assumption that a colored guy like me wouldn't know about an obscure rock musician. I also notice you honed in on one part of my post while ignoring the other parts. Still waiting for that 90s rock album that was more of a landmark than "Nevermind." And I mean a commercial and musical game-changer, not some obscure, underground darling that only 10 people bought. Now who's the "idiot?" LMBAO Empyrium, learn to speak English before criticizing lyrics. You guys are just too much fun! :smt043
Exactly. lol you just referred to him as a "obscure rock musician". He wasn't a rock musician dumbass. That's enough proof you know nothing about him. Ever heard of OK Computer by Radiohead? I'd love to see your arguments for how Cobain was better then Drake, or how Nevermind was more important then OK Computer. this oughta be good..
Gimme a break, what game did OK Computer change? What scene did it start? How many units did it shift? How many other bands copied them? Melded electronics with rock, cool. Seefeel did that too around the same time. And Stereolab. And Laika. Basically anybody on the Too Pure or Warp labels were doing that shit in the 90s. And I maintain none had the impact Kurt had. None. Radiohead is a fucking cult band. Go to any mall in America and mofos know who Nirvana is 15 years later. I would have respected you way more if you'd named something like Trompe Le Monde (1991) since Kurt ripped off the Pixies in the first place! Or guys like Soundgarden who only got signed because Nirvana put Seattle on the map. Come on man. This is some straw man shit. You talking just to be talking.
In my opinion, the whole point of Nirvana's lyrics is to convey a sense of wretchedness or despair. They don't have (nor are they intended to have, in my opinion) a narrative structure or tell a specific story. The "I'm not gonna crack" lines are about, taken in their entirety, someone going from "like" to "hate" in the space of a few lines. Not saying they're great lyrics or anything, just saying. Remember, the first line is "I like you", then "I love you", then "I miss you" all the way to "I kill you...". I'm nobody's expert, just wanted to point something out. And let's not forget that the guy was wrestling with a crippling heroin addiction for much of this period. If you have any doubt what that will do to you creatively, check John Frusciante for his heroin-wracked period's recordings. And by the way, I like Nirvana. Not my favorite band by any stretch, but they (along with Pearl Jam) did put rock back at the forefront of popular music after a few years of bubblegum pop. And both they and Radiohead have helped push paradigm shifts in the music that came after their respective recordings.
Nevermind started a quick fad that went dead after a few years. When's the last time you heard a grunge band making noise on the radio? 13 years after it's release and new bands are still paying homage to OK Computer. Coldplay Muse Bloc Party TV on the Radio Snow Patrol Keane And those are all bands who are still making music. Also because of it's sound, even classical and jazz musicians have admitted to being influence by OK Computer. Infact so many people were copying OK Computer that Thom Yorke didn't like it. So we went out and purposely made Kid A different in a way that nobody could copy it. In the same way that Bob Dylan changed to electric music when he was tired of everyone copying his folk. I can tell you know nothing about music. Your argument for Nevermind is how much it sold and that random people in the mall know about. Since when has sells and random people been an indicator of how much an album has impacted music? You're such a dork.
LOL none of the artists mentioned above sound at all like Radiohead :smt042 Peeps like you are the one good thing to come out of the death of record shops, nowhere for you to spout your tired musical strawman theories, haha Good day to you sir.
