It occurred to me recently that technology is changing so quickly that we take it all in stride. I was having a conversation with my teenage daughter and mentioned that I remember when there were no mobile phones.

What's your recollection of something that is now an everyday product that you remember not being around?

    TV's.

Back in the late 50's my family only had 1 in the house. I remember one night though, my sisters friend(in high school) was over for dinner and he told us about how he had a TV in his own room. We thought his family must have been filthy rich to have so many TVs.

Yeah, all these come to mind. I have a lot of memories about my daddy's 8-tracks. He drove a truck & was only home on weekends back then & every Saturday (after cartoons were over), he'd play his music...Fats Domino, Little Richard, Elvis, Johnny Cash, etc. & we'd all just hang out enjoying the tunes. lol

I also think of the cell phone thing...not having them & the the clunky original versions.

I also remember no dishwashers, having to type on the non-electric typewriter, hanging clothes on the line to dry, rotary phones, no cable/satellite & having an antenna, black & white tv with only a few channels & no remote controls, cars with no heat or ac, Atari, & kids actually playing outdoors.

I remember when Americans wouldn't own a foreign car and that "made in Japan" or "made in China" meant that you owned junk.

A coat hanger wrapped in foil paper to get better reception for the TV if the rabbit ear antenna was broken. Straight ghetto like a mofo back then.

Typewriters not computers (they came later with black screens and green writing), putting letters in envelopes and an actual mailbox. Telex and fax machines and mobile phones being the same size and weight as a brick

I remember actually going to a friends house to play and we'd  use our imaginations!!! I remember having no mobile phones, no vcr, having to get up off our arses to change the TV channel or the volume. I remember having to use those ring dial phones that had cords. I remember being delighted by the brand new atari my dad gave me. I remember going to the milk bar for a milk shake with friends.
I remember stealing playboy magazines from my stepdad just to see what was so fascinating about them, because that's the only place we could find porn..no internet (thankfully).
I remember writing notes to my best friend and handing them to her when my bus stopped at her school. She'd wait for me so we could swap notes (she didn't have a home phone).

I remember going to the video store, when we finally got a vcr, and seeing the beta section slowly shrink over time. LOL

So many memories. I loved the old days. I kinda wish most of it still applied today. Except for mobile phones and DVD. And the internet, to some extent.

You were considered hood rich back when where I grew up if you were lucky to have had one of these at home.

lippy remembers playing "american pie" on her record player...fleetwood mac was my favorite 8 track...if i wanted to talk to a friend on the phone it was in the kitchen on the wall and everyone sat right there and listened to the conversation...we used to have to answer the phone "last name and hello"...our home phone never rang past 9pm

having tv dinners was a treat...we didn't eat processed food very often...my mom cooked everything from scratch...

i remember having the pong game
    we only had one tv

when our family went on a road trip my mom would pack the cooler with ham sandwiches...we never ate out and if we did it was a VERY big deal...
