So I'm walking around Union Station in D.C. taking pictures of FEET Yep..feet, I had an idea to do a collage of shoes, I was at the entrance were the taxis are.......and a police officer says

Cop: I'm sorry you can't take pictures here
Parris: You are wrong, and the bad thing is you don't even know you are wrong. How can you call yourself enforcing the law if you don't even know what the law is. I can take pictures pretty much any place in the United States that is open and accessible to the public. And since I am not inhibit the flow of human traffic, that means I can take picture here too....educate yourself and then come back and talk to me"

Cop: I think you maybe be wrong.
Parris: You THINK I'm wrong or you KNOW I'm wrong. Because I am very sure of what I'm saying; you however don't seem so sure. I will explain it to you again, and after that I'm going back to taking pictures. Which is what I was doing before you started bothering me.

Cop: Sir if you are going to take picture I'm going to have to ask you to take them across the street.
Parris: If I move from this spot. I'm going to take the 300mm lens I have in my back, go across the street and I'm going to fill up my 32GB card with NOTHING but pictures of you. So you can leave me alone, or you can end up on face book

Cop: Just a moment. (he walks a few steps, starts talking to another dude...I open my bag and pull out my zoom lens) Look, just make sure you don't get in anyone's way.
Parris: Are you done because I was busy before you came over here. And if you give me your email address I'll email you the laws for Washington D.C.

    ...he just kept walking away.

The cop I feel was wrong. However out of curiosity, do you ask people if you can photograph them or their shoes? I would honestly find it a tad bit creepy and sketchy if a saw anyone taking random people photographs. I would give permission to be photographed if someone explained what they were doing.

Actually you don't need permission to take pictures of anyone that is in a public space. When you are walking down the street you have no expectation of privacy....so if you are on a public street, smile for the camera.

Contrary to popular belief the below is legal to be photographed.

    accident and fire scenes
    children
    celebrities
    bridges and other infrastructure
    residential and commercial buildings
    industrial facilities and public utilities
    transportation facilities
    superfund sites
    criminal activities
    law enforcement officers

Wow, but was the rudeness necessary? Come on.

If I was a cop, I'd have hauled you in for sassing me like a hormonal teenager and let you cool your heels for awhile.....especially a military man...damn.

I can state this with pretty good authority that you are ignorant when it comes to the presentation of a Soldier. You are ignorant in that regard, as the cop was ignorant in trying to enforce something he clearly knew nothing about.

You could have hauled me if you wanted too. I would have owned you and your job, and laughed in the end at your ignorance and stupidity. Police try that usually the the poor. I have the knowledge and the resources to ensure that dude would be seeking a new career field.

Being a Soldier doesn't mean being submissive, nor does it mean automatic immedient obedience to orders from anyone other than a superior.

Police officers are not my Superior. But in your ignorance you don't get it.

    ....on the contrary.

I have fought for this country my entire adult life....some 20 years, and I'm very very very good at it. And I've also spent time as a Police Officer. I be damned if you are going to tell me what I'm doing is wrong, JUST because you said it.

LOL...you dodn't have to like me. But you can't use my service as dig against me. And until you have spent time in uniform, you lack the understanding of what a Soldier is. And sucking the cock of warrior does not count, or [I know a person who]

....go serve, then come back and talk to me about being an American warrior.

Obviously this wouldn't apply for feet, but any head shots you get in a public area...do they need to sign a release before you can publish them?

My father and grandfathers were soldiers.

You, sir, are a knuckle-dragging, neanderthal... and my grandfathers, who had so many medals your head would swim, would be ashamed at one such as you who dared call yourself a 'soldier' or a 'warrior'. They would call you... no, they wouldn't. They wouldn't even bother to acknowledge someone who carried on or behaved like you. I don't imagine any soldier worth their salt would...

when you two are done your pissing contest, let me know
    :p

and stop talking about other people DB. Yrma served his country and you did not. that's all that matters, not the supposed medals and valor of some third parties.

I would agree, that in general, you have the right to photograph people in public places. However, photographers may be prohibited by local jurisdictions from photography in public spaces. You must also be concerned that you don't publish photographs that may place people in an unfavorable light.

this is america not north korea

as for photos, the cellphone w/camera standard has made it even more ridiculous to police stuff like this

some lady whipped out her camera phone on the train a few nights ago, taking pix and shit. I just put my boonie hat on and put my head down (not trying to end up on some sucker's facebook)

    Pfft..

My family has served in every war since WWI. Back when your grandfather swore up and down that people who skin was the same color as mine were cowards...ha ha ha and here you are carrying on the tradition.

    damn...

there is something that warriors rarily do, and that is degrade the service of another solider. Again, since yo have never serve your mind can't understand this. Again, position of ignorance.

...would they call me? Chances are they wouldn't, or serve with me, or eat in the same chow hall with me. So you really haven't said anything all that shocking. And having members of your family who have served does not mean you know shit about what a warrior does or doesn't do. Still speaking from a position of ignorance.

Are you slow? I have to ask that question. One would not expect for you to say anything other than what you wrote above to try to prove your point.

    I mean really.

not only are you still speaking from a position of ignorance, but you have a limited imagination.

    @Swirl...

....most jurisdictions do have some prohibition "INSIDE" public places, such as court house, clerk office..but those are places for which access it monitored.

Not being able to photography people in an unfavorable light is a myth. The standard is does the person have a reasonable expectation of privacy. If you go out , get drunk, and climb up the side of a wall...and get your picture taken. you just got your picture taken.

What a person is NOT able to do is take a photo and LIE about what the person was doing in the photo......even then, the person would have to prove damage.

    good conversation however.
