After reading the posts about skin bleaching, I found the just aired video about the child having plastic surgery to be equally unwise, IMO. During an interview, a reporter alluded to the fact that the child didn't feel bullied, while the mom insists that she heard negative comments by adults. So, it seems that the mom was the person transferring her own insecurities to the child.

I saw this somewhere else. I am a bit ambivelent about it. :smt102 I think it is more the mom too. If medical science has the ability to improve the girls life though, I don't hate the mom for taking that opportunity. The Dr. provided the surgery free of charge.

There's no getting around it. How you look greatly influences your life. Be as close to perfect as you can because life is just easier and more enjoyable

But, isn't that the point, when we suggest that the surgery is "improvement of life" or "as close to perfect as you can be", aren't we buying into societal pressures? How is this any different than skin bleaching, if the child is very dark-skinned and is teased about it, or the child is of very short stature, and parents consent to limb elongation surgery, or rhinoplasty, or too thin lips, etc? My sense is that all of this is about changing who you are, to satisfy society's view of "perfection"

You're right but it's the difference from having what you want and settling for scraps. We're a shallow society and it sucks but it is what it is.
Like Chris Rock said "If you look good you'll live a good life and if you're not you better read a book for every ten pounds you're overweight.
People just love pretty and no amount of complaining will ever change that.

Then, you have changed your opinion and believe that "skin bleaching" is ok then, since in any of those scenarios, it's merely a reflection of that person's or society's take on "looking good", and not necessarily reality. I'm not complaining or judging as much as observing what seems to be a difference in perception of right and wrong when the subject concerns an area where people have personal sensitivities.

I never said it was wrong I just don't see how it makes one look better. Every case of skin bleeching I think the person looks very weird its just very unnatural. Same goes for artificial tanning when people look all orange and shit.
