how does the mind shape your reality?

A friend once told me about a teenage girl she met at the doctor’s office. The girl talked about the fact that she thought she was pregnant and was looking forward to having her baby. After the girl left the office, the nurse told my friend in confidence that she felt sorry for the teenager who’d come in right before.
Apparently, the young girl wasn’t pregnant at all, but just wanted to be. In fact, she wanted a baby so bad that her body had taken on many of the characteristics of a pregnant woman: Her menstruations had stopped, her stomach started to protrude, she got morning sickness, and she even started to lactate. Because her desire to have a child was so deeply ingrained her psyche, her body convinced itself that she was indeed going to be someone’s mother.
This story is a very telling statement about the depth and power of the human mind. If you want something bad enough, your mind will eventually make it into a reality. Whether it is a good thing or bad, when your conscious and subconscious mind obsesses over the thing you desire the most, you will often find that the contents of your mind manifest themselves into reality over time.
Never let go of your dreams, be conscious of what you allow into your mind, and be careful about the mantras you recite to yourself. All of this eventually shapes your world, your life and your entire existence.

no i am not a buddhist...i do however think that the mind is so very powerful...i am non denominational christian...i don't attend church...i do read the bible...i also believe in free will...in that the mind has limitless possibilities...and then there is evolution which provides many alternate views...i guess you could say that i am always eager to learn and would go with the never say never when it comes to practicing an alternate religion...belief system...the most important factor is living our current life...before launching ourselves into an afterlife...

I know I'm oversimplifying, but the centrality of the mind/consciousness is a big part of Buddhism. Meditation, focus on being a right-thinking and right-acting person. It has always seemed to me to be more of a philosophy than a religion, as it is not hung up on the personality behind it all (i.e. a god, per se), but instead on the thinking and behavior that help one raise their consciousness to a higher level. My great-grandmother was into Buddhism for like 35 years, and it all started with her reading that book "As A Man Thinketh", which also pushed this 'will to power' or 'will it to be so and it will' concept. Nietzsche was also into some of this, albeit definitely not from a Buddhist standpoint. Okay, I'll shut up now. lol :D

I gotcha:) I figured that, I was just confused how you made that connection as what lippy posted is something that has been described in the western world time and time again. It something very real that isn't really Buddism-ish, its simply is a medical phenomenon that is very intriguing.
I am very into Buddism myself so I do appreciate what you are saying though.

Amazing read.. The mind is as a servant, but terrible as master..Meher Baba..

The mind being the creator of your life, it's our duty to understand it as much as possible.

I dig this...and I'll go into it when I have time. there is a misconception really. The historical Buddha never said there was no God, on the contrary he taught and spoke about the "Eternal One" often.

I also would not call Buddhism a religion but rather a "study" I've been a practicing Buddhist for almost 20 years now.

I'm not into a particular "sect" or understanding - or practicing per se -but I take a general stance. I like a lot of what it teaches and it somehow just fits my view and approach to life and people.. I read a lot of what the Dalai Lama has written. So Im just a vague generalist:)

I did take a religion test based on my beliefs and I fit right into one of the teachings but I can not even recall the name of it. I wish I could find the thread that was created for that - I think it was Britty that posted it.

    I understand.

I'm Nichiren Shoshu with is a sort of aggressive Evangelistic form of Buddhism. Generally speaking Buddhism don't "spread the words" Nichiren Daishonin believe otherwise that if one learns the truth, the truth should be share. Unlike Christianity Buddhism doesn't teach "I'm right and you are wrong" but Nichirn did believe in spreading the "word" (I used word for lack of a better....well, word)

Now this is the kind of stuff I could sit around and talk about for hours because I have learned over the years in my lifetime that the mind truly is one of the most powerful tools in the universe we could possibly conceive, which has lead me to this interest in the mind-brain connection and my new found love of neuro-science.

I mean you know you are talking about something pretty powerful when things like computers and cell phones are patterned after the make up of the brain, with all the stuff of they are capable of and the technology is constantly evolving just as our brains and minds should too and we aren't even using its full potential no where near it actually and look at all of we have created just in the last 100 yrs!!!

But something I found very interesting by a teacher I listen to over the internet from time to time pointed out is that a lot of this technology if not all of it is usually used to help us keep connected to one another hence thats why networking site like myspace, facebook, and even this site are so popular because we all want to always be connected, know things when and as they happen or at least feel apart of something with that said he stated that one of the goals of human evolution could quite possibly be telepathy, which brings us back to once again the power of the mind. Man, I can't wait till we finally that one out!!!
