that's not fair, you shouldn't generalize like that. it's not black women nor black men, it's uncle tom celebrities being puppets of corporate america. to me sherri is just an idiot not because she is a bw, but because she is dumb.....and hil harper, whie very intelligent, at times, comes, off as a grandstanding prick. he acts like an expert, but he's barely 40 and from iowa, he doesn't share my experience.
How am I generalizing? I am speaking of these type of shows...not black women in general. But these type of "I can't find a good black man because" shows are on the increase and most of them do nothing but to poison minds with ignoramus statements that shed a negative light on black men. Moreover, not all of the women on these type of shows are celebrities. Some are just your normal single black women. Please know that I am not generalizing single black women...my bitch is about these types of programming. For the most part, many black women are single because they choose to be single. Not everyone wants to be married.
Interesting video and also very revealing in several respects. I suspect the issue was not really about potential for her, but it was more about the time-line she could afford for the potential benefits to materialise. She was not willing to take that risk, period! I think we must be fair on people sometime and seek to understand why they make those choices, and not judge them.I am not trying to make excuses for her here, but rather I seek to further expand the boundaries of the debate. Hill can make so many choices, or take so many gambles in life. After all, he comes from a middle class family and has gone to Ivy League schools, and along the way he has acquired the cultural and the social capital needed to succeed in life, he was not just your everyday Joe. This is important. The idea of Hill Harper being a struggling actor looks good on his biography, yet what gets less mentioned is the idea he had more choices in life, and after school, he was now following his dreams. Acting was just one of the many options open. It explains why he is also an author now. On the other hand, Sherri Sheppard was a struggling actress with little education, and had only her talent to live on. This woman had no insurance on the future. Both might be black, but clearly they were in two different situations. Obama's example is a little bit off. Michelle was a highly educated woman who knew the value of an Ivy League degree. She was not a struggling woman like Sherri Sheppard She had settled down into a career. She was willing to allow Barrack take his risks, yet she knew that if she wanted she could rein him in when he had exhausted his options. After all, he had his education as a fall back option. And she tried it when his political fortunes were beginning to look bleak, if you read the story about his marital troubles. Apart from that, I think, as a politician, he taught law at the University of Chicago. If Sherri was not settled on a career, did anyone expect her to have the wiggle room to make the choices or take the chance that Michelle took? If we must come to equity, it makes sense to come with clean hands! I am sure over generations and through cultural learning, the kind of 'damn the consequence' and all out money getting, and career first kind of consideration given to, in some cases by black women would reduce as wealth filters massively into the hands of black women. It is interesting that Sherri said she was ready for a relationship with Hill in the video. But that suggestion is open to many interpretations, one of which would cast her as a gold digger.
My overall point was where a man is today doesn't mean that's where he'll be five years from now. A lot of women (doesn't matter the race) are very short sighted. I'm not saying date the drug addict in hopes of becoming a CEO but what about the dude who's a plumber maybe he hopes to own the business one day. Find out what his plan is before he's dismissed because if there's anything this recession should be teaching us. No job is safe and the sun don't shine forever so its better to find someone you are very compatible with who will have your back because at the end of the day you can't put a price on that.
Im suprised that he tried to holler at her . she is an attractive woman but .....anyway she was saying she didnt want to holla at him because he was riding the bus like her. so what was she bring to the table. why is jackie reed up there with her fine ass well stated. it is just another way to make BM look inert. again well stated. it is just another way to make BM look inert and lethargic cant add on to that. damn good statement
Didn't we already discuss this ABC special? Nevermind, I guess you're coming at it from a different standpoint/viewpoint...
you clarified it now, but that way you said it before, i took it the other way. but i agree with your main points.
Such a shame that a lot of females(not all) put so much stock into a guy's bank account. So much for "strong independent women" lol.
