It's ironic that the conversation transitioned from slavery to the NFL. I often feel like those guys are treated like slaves, compared to other professional sports. The players have the shortest potential careers because of the contact nature of the game. So often players suffer injuries that leave them debilitated for the rest of their lives, orthopedic problems, brain trauma and weight related medical problems. Now, they are talking about extending the season which will only result in more injuries.

As much the owners say they care, their actions don't show it. The league takes in about $6 Billion dollars and the owners get half of it. The worst part for the players is that despite the potential for injury, their contracts aren't guaranteed like other sports. So, I support the player's efforts to enhance the value of their contracts, as opposed to greedy owners taking it all.

But, like all businesses it's all about the money for the owners.

I was thinking that exact same thing as well because of the nature of the NFL.

The teams in the NFL can cut a player because of the nature of having non-guaranteed contracts. So I never fault the NFL players for holding out during their prime of their careers for their guaranteed cash.

Like Darelle Revis last season with the Jets, I can't fault him for having held out and wanting to make his change at his peak, because if you suffer an injury or your game slips, here comes the "The Turk" aka getting your ass cut from the roster, no matter how good a servant you may have been. :)

ah man, I hate when a post goes right over someones head.......

Well after you went on your little "black children" rant you yourself even said you don't think Kid Rock is racist.(making your previous rant a little useless)
My argument for Kid Rock wasn't standing on one leg so debunking the black children thing doesn't make any difference what so ever.

When you look at the other facts that I stated(the ones you ignored) then you can see a strong argument for Kid Rock not being racist.

Does having a black child make you not racist? No.
But when I've given other good reasons and proven that he's not racist....having a black child is just the icing on the cake.

Now unless you wanna tell me Kid Rock is racist towards his child and not anyone else....

I am familiar with Kid Rock, and I even admit to having listened to his music in the past. Musical artists, actors and others who are in the public eye often engage in behavior that they later live to regret. Some of these folk seem to consider themselves above reproach based on their celebrity and associations, and that people would never view their repugnant behavior as offensive. Others do so because they are either clueless, insensitive, immature, plainly ignorant of the the impact of their behavior or in fact have characters that are totally aligned to those actions or behaviors attributed to them. John Mayer was certainly an example of an artist who believed that because his music was so embraced by the Black community, that would be granted a "pass" on his use of the "N-word". Howard Sterns issued public apologies over his insensitive and racially charged language toward female collegiate basketball players. I'm also sure that Madonna regrets her public denouncement of "all Black men" as a lapse in judgement, made in light of her several failed attempts at relationships with Black athletes. I'm not sure where Kid Rock ranks on that continuum of behavior, but his use of the Rebel battle flag was plainly wrong as it is a symbol of the tradition of Southern prejudice and violence toward African Americans.

To debate whether one symbol is worse that another, The Rebel flag versus the Nazi flag, doesn't respond to the core issue, racism. Does is matter if you are bitten by a German Shepard or a Pit bull? The point is that any dog bite hurts, like the bite of racism from either symbol is hurtful. Any argument based on assessing popular opinion of one or the other misses the point entirely.

I have not seen any evidence to support a presumption other than the Rebel flag is a symbol of the worst of the Southern traditions associated with racial intolerance toward African Americans. Traditionally, the Rebel flag is a symbol of racism. One poster, a white Southerner suggested that she views the flag as a symbol of Southern pride because she was taught that growing up. Well, guess what, that's exactly the mechanism of indoctrination that you would use to convince future generations to stay the course in a way that would be more acceptable.

The concept of the Rebel flag being a symbol of Southern tradition is based on the same concepts of deflection and concealment of true intentions that have been used by Southerners throughout history. Just as most Americans grew to understand the racist connotations of the flag Southerners simply clothed the flag in a different meaning to gain acceptance. It's the same tactics that the University of Mississippi used in a failed attempt to preserve their mascot, Colonel Reb. When the students were unsuccessful in their campaign, and it was a monumental one, they tried to insist that the mascot was fashioned after a beloved older African American gentlemen who dressed in garb similar to their mascot. They went so far as to publish as picture of this fictitious character on their web site to garner support. These "re-directions" from the real issue can be viewed as well in similar portrayals comparing the KKK and the NAACP. The NAACP doesn't have a history of violence and stated hate of another race. Whites were in fact instrumental in the founding of the NAACP. But, still those comparisons are drawn in efforts to put the two organizations on equal footing, when clearly they aren't the same.

Inane references to interracial couples and supposed changes in the N-word clearly miss the point. It's not an argument of some or all, it's about the meaning of whether the flag is a racist symbol. Interracial couples have done nothing to incur discrimination. Nothing about such relationships has a history that might allow others to judge them objectively as negative. So, ANY dislike of them is plainly based on prejudice. The Rebel flag, on the other hand, does have a history of repression. So, you are making an apples and oranges analysis.

As far as the N-word is concerned, it's a failed comparison in very real terms. There has been no change in the meaning of the N-word. People today find it as reprehensible as ever. There have always been people who have spoken out against the use of this racial epithet. The fact that certain artists of urban music have co-opted the term or glorified gang violence or misogyny have not changed any presumptions that these words and ideas are negative.

As I said, I don't know what is at the heart of Kid Rock's use of the Rebel flag. I do know that it's a powerful symbol meant to hold on to the history of racial intolerance in the South. It's important because greater harm can spring from indifference over small issues. Acceptance of negative concepts can be the foothold to allow tolerance for much more harmful ideology.

  8. It's this simple. The South lost. STOP ROCKING THE FUCKING FLAG. Anyone who rocks it just makes themselves look like traitors. This is the UNITED States of America not the CONFEDERATE States. They fought. They lost. They got their asses kicked. End of story.
