I have always wondered what things were like for black guys specifically in the midwestern region of the United States. I do know that in the 1700s, the United States was composed of being only 13 colonies. After we had beaten the British in some kind of war, and the Treaty of Paris was implemented in 1774, and the Declaration of Independence in 1776, we began to expand out westward and create states there. I do know that in the midwest, the only people that were there historically were Native Americans and not really anyone else. It's different from the south, which did have a racial history to it, and the north, which had problems and racial episodes of it's own. Things are a lot different in our generation, but I still don't really know what things are actually like for black people in certain Midwestern states such as Kansas, Missouri, Minnesota, Iowa, Indiana and Colorado. If you live in or near a midwestern state, this is a good question for you.
Mike, not to confuse the issue, or derail your thread, but the states that comprise the "Midwest" are, Illinois Indiana Iowa Kansas Michigan Minnesota Missouri Nebraska North Dakota Ohio South Dakota. Michigan and Illinois in particular were centers of manufacturing for the automotive and steel industries, respectively. There was a great migration of African Americans from the South during the early part of the 20th century, corresponding to the industrial revolution. Those two states in particular offered the opportunity for much paying jobs than those of the South. You should know that despite the brighter job picture, significant prejudice and racism existed in these areas.
Ok, I'll look up some information about those places so I could get some more knowledge in my head. Thanks for your input.
Minnesota is a great place for IR couples.....lots of respect and acceptance in the Twin Cities area.....IF you can stand the cold....! Lots of beautiful people there and definately earns the right of "Minnesota Nice".....:smt023
Agreed. Folks from twin cities and the Dakotans are the nicest and friendliest. Lots of Scandinavian descents especially Norwegians. IR is not a big deal there. Lots of Blk folks in Chicago, Milwaukee, Madison, twin cities. You will be surprised you see blk faces even in very small town of Midwest.
That's why you like your Christian sister so much.....she be Minnesota Nice...! (or used to be and carried it with to Florida....definately need it here...!)
through my travels to the midwest lippy would say Minneapolis...Kansas City are both very IR friendly cities...major metropolitan areas tend to be more tolerant than less populated areas...if you get too far out in the burbs the tolerance level changes quickly...stay closer to the core...
It's so true, and not just the Twin Cities, but all of Minnesota is very acceptable to IR and all warm hearted people....just too cold.....!
