I used to be a rather sarcastic person in high school. Then I started studying Psychology and well, promptly became more clear and to the point in conversations.

Ever wonder why some people feel the need to crack jokes all the time? Or more importantly, crack jokes at other people's expense? Check this out and discuss:

Sarcasm can be a cowards way of responding, an an attempt not to be insulting. That way the can't be accused of being rude....

...but that is just what sarcasm is..

I hate it when people say "Don't you know sarcasm when you see it" if you have to tell a person you are just being sarcastic, then you missed your mark. I'f I'm being sarcasm, I MEAN to insult you, I'm just being colorful.

Good article but it doesn't fully explore the potential uses of sarcasm. It is a disservice to the witty to necessarily color their use of it as an expression of insecurity, when it can also be used a weapon against the absurdities of modern life.

BrotherWise, in his wisdom, made a salient point a few days ago about my humor being more reflective of a dry British style. Americans don't like to look stupid, although in many instances they are that very thing. If you're a gifted wordsmith, you should welcome the opportunity to "take-the-piss-out" of people who ignite your ire for whatever reason, and usually it is their rank stupidity.

i would agree that your humour is more australian/english, and whilst i'm not the gifted wordsmith that you are, taking the piss out of some people (which btw you're brilliant at) is one of my favorite pastimes...it's just a lower brow piss take than yours :D

edit: actually if you look at most of the posters from england and australia you'll notice their ability to hang shit on people skillfully...!!! got to love the english/aussie humour.

I think its cus we don't take ourselves as seriously, we can quite easily laugh at ourselves to, no getting our knickers/y fronts in a twist over a couple of bluff words.

    1. Thank you for the credits, my friend.

    2. Americans generally hate the idea of honest observations of their own follies. So, utilizing sarcasm in their presence eases the perception that person is hostile to their very nature.

    I disagree,

I believe in many cases sarcasm is more damaging than out right bluntness.

Perhaps I should have included "generally" or "individual" basis. In other words, that's IF you're incapable of dealing with it.

I went back and tried to add "generally" or "individually" to your previous statement and umm...not only did it not make sense, but I still disagree.

Mostly because "general" and "individual" sort of cancel each other out. I'm not a wordsman such as yourself, but you kind talked yourself into a circle on that one..

    ...I digress

Americans are a blunt people. Sarcasm rarely creates a convivial atmosphere as you suggested. In fact, the direct opposite.

The only way this statement is true is if you put.

...."there are a few people who [........rewrite/reword.......] throw in a couple of BigBrotherWise bars that send a few of these weak-brained-wonders into a tizzy, but then it still wouldn't make much sense.

...because generally speaking sarcasm is "intellect on the offensive” It allows one to make up for lacking decorum and tact.” It is the reason why British humor is lost on Americans, and what makes us laugh is seen as cruel and insensitive to them.

Sarcams makes people feel smarter than they actually are.

I shall now return to my previous knuckle dragging antics.

In other words, people who can't take sarcasm are generally weak. If you ALLOW someone who makes sarcastic remarks to get the best of you, then that individual is doing you a service by not hurting your feelings much. Sadly, while Lovasik may bring up a good point, he's probably experience way too many comments which flew over his head.

And last, sarcasm doesn't make a person feel smarter. You're more than welcome to disagree with this, but I know myself better than you and quite frankly, I use sarcasm at times and I don't consider myself smarter than anyone else unless they show me that they are idiots. So no, I don't think I'm smarter than the next person. That's just in their heads.

Geez Wise, did you read the article i posted at all??

Laurence Lovasik's opinions don't really mean anything to me personally. He was a man of the catholic church his entire life, and you know how that bullshit goes.

Says the person who likes to be shirtless and exercise e-thuggery at its finest. Come on kiddo, with an ego as inflated as yours, I'm surprised your dick hasn't suffocated from the shit that spews out your mouth.

From the master of sarcasm himself. Well put. The American and British sense of humor are vastly different.
